Popular Leadership in the Presidency demonstrates that U.S. presidents and the public had forged a strong and enduring relationship long before the 24 hour news cycle and the internet. In this enlightening and engagingly written book, Karen S. Hoffman argues that this connection is encouraged by the very structure of the presidency: the Constitution's placement of executive power in a single person who would perform the symbolic role of sole national leader and be indirectly elected. Focusing on specific instances involving each of the first four presidents, Hoffman traces their rhetorical strategies as the chief executives sought to respond to public expectations while adapting to prevailing political norms and emerging traditions. Rooted in rich and varied historical evidence and propelled by informed scholarly argument, her analysis broadens the study of presidential rhetoric well beyond public speeches to encompass presidential use of the partisan press, action and inaction, and even attire. The result is a fascinating tale of the origins and initial evolution of the ongoing ties between presidents and the citizens they represent. (Karen M. Hoffman (visiting professor, Marquette Univ.) offers a thesis unique in presidential rhetoric scholarship. In the process, she challenges current arguments that assert there is a difference between the Founding generation and modern presidents in how they employed popular rhetoric. Hoffman argues simply that presidents have always used rhetoric to communicate to the citizenry. While the means and manner of that communication has changed over time, all presidents have used rhetoric in some fashion or form. It should be noted that Hoffman broadens the definition of rhetoric to include actions along with the spoken and written word. Furthermore, the author contends that the constitutional structure of the presidency not only allowed, but also encouraged, this development. The Constitution, then, encourages a "public presidency." To bolster her case that the president has always used rhetoric, Hoffman engages in a case study of the first four presidents. The point is not to fit them into a construct of "going public," but to account for how they "faced the public." Summing Up: Recommended. We are all happy with his new books

My son used Bastien piano basic in the beginning when he was 3. A few months later after he finished level 1B, he transferred to Piano adventure (Lesson, Theory, Performance, Technic & Sight-reading), because his piano teach was using it. It's well organized. Also, my son is learning fast using this book. I think he finished all 2A books in 2 or 3 months. We are all happy with his new books.

Piano Adventures makes teaching my daughters piano fairly easy. The progression that these books follows makes sense and helps my kids go from one lesson to the next. My husband teaches them and plays the piano well but wouldn't be able to teach them without these books. The are a great tool and I am so excited that my girls are learning how to play.

The images in this debut collection of short stories are such that one can only wonder at the creative imagination of the writer, marveling at his ability to find the perfect metaphor to describe an atmosphere, a setting, or a character. The stories are about individuals, many separated, several unhappy, perhaps living marginal lives. How does a writer dwell on the loneliness, the separateness of people, without pushing the reader away in despair? Through his art, and Wangersky succeeds in doing exactly that. These stories provide glimpses into the psyches of people whose lives have turned in unexpected directions. Reading this collection means gaining insight into personalities; it means seeing new geographies, primarily in Nova Scotia and Newfoundland. It means being bathed in adept images, at times beautiful, at times horrifying, but ultimately satisfying. A particularly memorable story is "No Apologies for Weather," in which the occasional rages of a beloved wife are seen as violent northeasters, which one eventually learns how to weather. A man on an ill-conceived vacation decides to stay in a hot tub all day and all night, rather than face his disintegrating family.

In these stories, some people seem to escape the consequences of their bad decisions, some people wind up being redeemed, and some are left to fates the reader can only imagine.

As a backdrop, often a counterpoint, to these very human struggles, Wangursky paints the most exquisite canvasses with his words. Whether it be landscape or seascape of his native Newfoundland, startling weather, fine woodworking, or the workings of a factory, he presents us with note-perfect descriptions of the often-stunning world in which we imperfect humans live. That we are capable of doing more than acting instinctually, of making decisions, marks us as human among the living creatures of this world. Thus, Wangursky reminds us, even bad decisions can be cause for celebration, of what it means to be human.

Russell Wangersky is an award-winning non-fiction writer and editor. He has received several National Newspaper Awards, won Prism International's Creative Non-Fiction competition two years running, won Prairie Fire's Creative Non-Fiction competition once, and has been a finalist for many other editorial and writing awards. Once again, Stephanie McAfee writes an Ace Jones keeper. The whole Yoga bit had me laughing out loud (not uncommon when reading about Ace). Looking forward to her new book due out in July.

Holy cow!

For you who have been reading Ace's stories, this one starts out with her making a court appearance for a "situation" that occurred at the Walmart. Yes, I know now you want to read it.

This short story was 100% laugh out loud. I could hardly breathe at one point, I was laughing so hard. I can sure sympathize with Ace. And honestly, she has the best one liners around.

If you follow Ace, get this one. If you haven't read these books by Stephanie McAfee - you need to. They are truly laugh out loud, great, fun stories.

I do have a lot of authors I fans of whose books I love, but these books & this author are the most special to me. I have never identified with the character in a book as much as I do Ace.

A Fun Interim Book

Stepanee McAfee NEVER disappoints her faithful fans! Ace--down in the dumps--in Bugtussle, goes for therapy upon the insistence of her two best friends (so funny), but it is for just one session. Out of money and missing Mason, Ace settles for short walks with her dog and hours of sleep at her house. Upon realizing that she does need therapy, she finally goes to see a psychiatrist on her own. Will she go back to Mason? Will she be happy again. Wait for the third book.
