Dorothy Martin of eccentric hat fame finds another dead body in this fifth installment in Dams's successful series (Death in Lacquer Red, etc.). Sixty-something Dorothy, an American who recently married British police officer Alan Nesbitt, resides in the cathedral town of Sherebury. With Alan on business in Africa, Dorothy travels to London only to find that the young American businessman with whom she had chatted earlier has died somewhere along the trip to Victoria Station. When the death is not reported in the papers, Dorothy becomes suspicious, and with the help of Sherebury's resident computer whiz Nigel Evans, she discovers that the young man was the CEO of a rising software company. Dorothy infiltrates the company's London office as a temporary secretary and begins hunting about for the truth. Her tenure in the corporate office flushes out several suspects and coincides with another murder. Dams has always provided clever tales, and Dorothy is quickly becoming popular among mystery fans. Once again, however, there are a few blemishes in an otherwise amiable story. Dorothy's London friends, Americans Tom and Lynn Anderson, are a little too understanding; and Dorothy is yet another cloyingly spry senior citizen. Although the finale is not especially surprising, it is gratifying. (Sept.) FYI: Dams received the Agatha Award for her first Dorothy Martin mystery, The Body in the Transept.

For all her mild-mannered ways and grandmotherly demeanor, Dorothy has a habit of getting involved in murder, much to her husband's consternation. This time, she finds the dead body of a fellow passenger on the train into Victoria Station. Then the body disappears, and no one--not even the police--seems aware that a murder has been committed. Of course, Dorothy's curiosity is aroused, and with Alan out of town and unable to protest, she sets out to find the missing body and the story behind the man's death. Her investigation has her temping in a computer firm and surfing the Net to uncover a software scam. Dams' fifth entry in this delightful series is nicely paced, inventively plotted, and full of surprises. A fine example of the British cozy as interpreted by an American midwesterner. Emily Melton

A Bit of a Let Down

I was very excited about 'Victim in Victoria Station' and could not wait to get started. However, I was soon disappointed. The reason for Alan not being there was very contrived and I cannot imagine anyone rushing off to keep an appointment after her experience on the train. There were too many characters in the office to keep track of, especially since they were not very relevant to the story. The murders and motives are never explained, yet we are taken ad nauseam through endless (fruitless?) late night searches. Not one of the best in the series. Missed the hats as well, although I did enjoy the red one near the beginning.

Disappointed

I could hardly wait to read this latest Dorthey Martin book. So I bought the hard cover. It is so bad I almost did't finish it. The murders are never explained. The characters are all gray and you need a guide to tell them apart. In the end you think to yourself,"That is it?" Mrs. Martin, not your best effort.

Another enjoyable Dorothy Martin read

As an anglophile and part-owner of a software development company, this one had me intrigued before I opened the cover; it didn't let me down. Dams could have made mistakes when she forayed into technical issues, but she didn't. The prose is clean and simple to understand for those non-technical. The plot moved well, and the setting was interesting. Alan was missed in this book, and not just by Dorothy. Hopefully he will have more of a presence in the future stories I'm already eagerly awaiting.

Communicating Identity explores the many and much varied identities of the Italic peoples of the Iron Age, and how specific objects, places and ideas might have been involved in generating, mediating and communicating these identities. The term identity here covers both the personal identities of the individuals as well and the identities of groups on various levels (political, social, gender, ethnic or religious). A wide range of evidence is discussed including funerary iconography, grave offerings, pottery, vase-painting, coins, spindles and distaffs and the excavation of settlements. The methodologies used here have wider implications. The situation in the northern Black Sea region in particular has often been compared to that of southern Italy and several of the contributions compare and contrast the archaeological evidence of the two regions.

About the Author
Katy P. Sian is a lecturer in sociology at The University of Manchester. Previously she was a postdoctoral research fellow at The University of Leeds where she also completed her PhD. She takes a key interest in debates surrounding racism and ethnicity studies, sociology, Sikh studies, Islamophobia, postcolonialism, Diaspora and South Asian identity.

Highly recommend this book.

I highly recommend this book. It is gripping, persuasive, and concise yet informed and detailed. At its core, the book is about how the Sikh community in the UK has formed its identity through a (historically situated) discourse that is based on constructing Muslims as an 'enemy'. Using the example of "forced conversions" (i.e., Muslim men allegedly manipulating and deceiving Sikh women in order to convert them to Islam), Sian shows how this narrative is nothing more than a myth or “fantasy”, which has no real evidential basis, and one that has given rise to a distinct form of Islamophobia. It draws upon and mirrors an orientalist discourse that views Muslims as innately hostile, barbaric and threatening, Sian argues. What I found particularly interesting was Sian’s discussions around how this narrative was being used by Sikh men to renegotiate the shift in gender-relations and re-occupy a dominant position. The “forced conversion” narrative, Sian writes, is used by Sikh men to "restore a patriarchal balance" and take control of Sikh female bodies.

Though some perceive this book to be "anti-Sikh" and "pro-Muslim" (as some reviewers on this website have claimed, wrongly in my view) this could not be further from the truth. Firstly, the author specifically says that the book is about understanding Sikh representations of Sikh-Muslim conflict and how Sikh identity is formed. It is not a book about how Muslim identity is formed or how Muslims represent/view Sikhs. Talking about the "Muslim-side" is not therefore relevant for this project since the book is about Sikhs. Secondly, Sian dedicates an entire chapter (Chapter 9 – “Who is a Sikh”) to discussing the way in which the Sikh community can (re)shape its identity without constructing Islam/Muslims as an existential threat. Using a de-colonial framework, Sian argues that the Sikh community could redefine itself, for example, as a nation without a nation-state in the same way as the Palestinians and/or Kashmiris. Sikh identity would therefore be framed around statelessness; not antagonism and negativity towards Muslims. The key point here is that Sian is saying identity is constantly developing and is flexible, which means identity can be reformulated in a way that empowers and liberates Sikhs. Sikhs, Sian says, have fought successful campaigns around the turban, the "kara" (religious bangle) and the "kirpan" (dagger), and these successes show how the community has the determination and ability to fight for political recognition and to will to live their lives outside of the secular and "western" gaze. The only challenge the Sikh community faces, she argues, is that this political will/determination has not (yet) become dominant or "hegemonic".

This book is critical of the ways in which Sikh identity has formed and evolved until date, but it provides an excellent framework that enables the Sikh community in the UK to free itself from and orientalist/"Western" gaze. Is this an academic book? No. Is it a blueprint calling for Sikh recognition and liberation? Yes, and that is why I highly recommend it.

Cherry-Garrard was himself a member of the expedition that had two goals: to discover as much as was scientifically possible about the terrain and habitat of Antarctica, and to be the first to reach the South Pole. Confronted by the shattering knowledge that Roald Amundsen had reached the South Pole a month before them, Scott's party then had to negotiate the last, heroic part of their journey, a doomed attempt which has entered modern mythology.

About the Author
Apsley Cherry-Garrard (1886-1959) served as a biologist for the ill-fated Antarctic expedition. classic travel book

The Worst Journey in the World has been called the one of the greatest travel book in English, and not just by me. At one time it was about to go out of print and was brought back from the edge of death by enthusiasts writing appreciations of it for magazines and newspapers. It is a fabulous, hair-raising page-turner about a group of intrepid Englishmen, part of the doomed Scott polar expedition, who rather breezily set off in the polar winter on a side expedition to the coast to get eggs of the emperor penguin for scientific study. Sub-zero temperatures! howling winds! crummy equipment! arctic darkness! stiff (literally) upper lips! They are all there.

Worst Journey in the World is the Best story in the world

It would be difficult to exaggerate the impression this book made on me. Knowing how it ends does not for a second take away any of the suspense and awe of this story. Cherry-Girard is able to make you understand what kept these men going. You grow to admire them, root for them and even to love them. They were such gentlemen. Their bravery was without bravado. Courtesy never lapsed under the absolute worst imaginable strains.
Reading this book made me want to go and see that continent, so beautiful were his descriptions. I did go see it, and would return in an instant if I got the chance.
I am a woman past middle age, and yet this story of adventure and scientific discovery is one of my all time favorite books. Believe me, you will not be sorry you spent some time on Robert Scott's expedition to the south pole.

The Best Book for the Worst Journey

As one of the participants in the Terra Nova Expedition, Apsley Cherry-Garrard is more than qualified to write about it. He brings to life the events and adventures of the men of Scott's Expedtition, the good things and the bad things, the dreary things and the exciting things.
When he begins the book, "Cherry" seems to be angry, railing at the circumstances of the trip, but then he hits a stride and remembers the event rather than the emotion of it, which makes for much better reading. Relating the tale of the party waking at 2am to the sound of booming, realizing that the ice on which they are camped has broken off into floes and they are now on the way out to sea, the horses on the other floe, kind of give the reader pause. Cherry recounts the story of the rest of the day, the campers hop-scotching from one floe to the next, WITH horses, trying to make it back to shore, all the time watched by Orcas, with one eye out of the water, circling and waiting.....can't get much more exciting than that....But it does!

You'll just have to read it yourself and find out!

Powerful!

I have read a lot of leadership books, and even listened to a few on CD, and this book is one of the best. Most books tell you if you are a leader, how to become a leader, and so on... This book lays out action items and things you can actually do to lead, motivate people, and communicate more effectively. Leadership is often times a natural skill, however people don't train leaders to lead, they just give them people to manage and hope for the best. If you want to be an influential leader and not just a boss, read this book.

This book really gives a compelling outline of much more efficient ways to be a good boss or leader. I think we all know that happier employees mean happier customers but we don't all know the best ways to keep employees happy while gaining profit. About the Author

Giovanni Carmelo Verga (Catania, 2 settembre 1840 – Catania, 27 gennaio 1922) è stato uno scrittore e drammaturgo italiano, considerato il maggior esponente della corrente letteraria del verismo. La data di nascita di Giovanni Verga non è specificata, ma si pensa che sia nato o il 31 agosto 1840 o il 2 settembre 1840 da una famiglia di piccoli proprietari terrieri: fu registrato all'anagrafe di Catania. Il padre, Giovanni Battista Catalano, era di Vizzini, dove la famiglia Verga - di lontane ascendenze spagnole, visto che erano giunti in Sicilia col nome di Vegas nel 1282 circa - aveva delle proprietà, e discendeva dal ramo cadetto della famiglia alla quale appartenevano anche i baroni di Fontanabianca; la madre si chiamava Caterina Di Mauro e apparteneva ad una famiglia borghese di Catania. Il nonno di Giovanni, come testimonia il De Roberto in un articolo raccolto, insieme a molti altri, in un volume a cura di Carmelo Musumarra, era stato carbonaro e, nel 1812, eletto deputato per Vizzini al primo Parlamento Siciliano. Verga aveva due fratelli, Mario e Pietro. Rappresentano da sempre motivo di acceso dibattito la questione riguardante l'esatto luogo di nascita di Giovanni Verga, nonché la data dell'evento; benché gran parte dei testi lo collochino a Catania, basandosi sul contenuto dell'atto di nascita, esistono fondate argomentazioni sulla base delle quali è possibile ritenere che essa sia avvenuta nei pressi di Vizzini. La seconda tesi, secondo cui Verga sarebbe nato in un podere di campagna, di proprietà dello zio don Salvatore, in contrada Tièpidi (una zona di campagna a pochi chilometri dal centro abitato di Vizzini, citata dall'autore verista nei suo scritti col nome di Tebidi o Tèpidi), poggia su diverse constatazioni.

Something Completely Different

This is a wonderful novel focused on village life in a mostly pre-literate Sicily of the 1870s. Newly united Italy wants a navy, and disrupts the life of a traditional fishing family by taking its sons. It has a family resemblance with Flaubert's great MADAME BOVARY, except there's a deeper sympathy for the dilemmas of the characters, easily sensed under the tight-lipped, objective, "realistic" narration. With great originality, a good deal of the narration is carried out through the conversations of the villagers, just as if you were there listening to the villagers chatting. One could say that this is the world Joe DiMaggio escaped by becoming a baseball star, except that there's only one character who "wants to get away," and he's not easy to identify with. Instead, the narrative gets you involved in the outlooks and feelings of the others, who can only conceive of living honorable lives and having their own house in this village in the shadow of Mount Etna.
