Christian Antisemitism: A History of Hate, by William Nicholls

In Christian Antisemitism: A History of Hate, Professor William Nicholls, a former minister in the Anglican Church and the founder of the Department of Religious Studies at the University of British Columbia, presents his stunning research, stating that Christian teaching is primarily responsible for antisemitism. As Nicholls states, these conclusions 'can now be fully justified by the most up-to-date scholarship, Christian as well as Jewish.' Nicholls writes, 'Many Jewish writers have said, quite simply, that the Nazis chose the Jews as the target of their hate because two thousand years of Christian teaching had accustomed the world to do so. Few Christian historians and theologians have been sufficiently open to the painful truth to accept this explanation without considerable qualification. Nevertheless, it is correct.' Christian Antisemitism traces, over two millennia, the growing domination of Western culture by the Christian 'myth' (as Nicholls calls it) about the Jews, and shows how it still exerts a major influence even on the secularized 'post-Christian world.' Nicholls shows, through scrupulous research and documentation, that the myth of the Jews as Christ-killers has powered anti-Judaism and antisemitism throughout the centuries. Nicholls clearly illustrates that this myth is present in the New Testament and that 'it has not yet died under the impact of modern critical history.' Also included in this remarkable volume is Nicholls' research regarding the Jewishness of Jesus. He writes, 'Historical scholarship now permits us to affirm with confidence that Jesus of Nazareth was a faithful and observant Jew who lived by the Torah and taught nothing against his own people and their faith...the Romans, not the Jews, were the Christ-killers.' In Part I, 'Before the Myth,' Nicholls explores the life of Jesus and his teachings as found in the New Testament. Was Jesus the founder of Christianity? Did he offer teachings against his people? Did he believe himself?

Professor William Nicholls is one of those rare thinkers capable of combining extraordinary scholarship and erudition with a deep understanding of human nature and human aguish. Above all, he is a man of remarkable courage, a courage stemming from his ownsense of morals and faith. Christian Antisemitism: A History of Hate is a work with no precedent and no equal. At one level, it is a brilliant, breathtaking chart of the history of Christianity, from its birth to modern times, and the legacy of hatred that it promoted, in both its religious and secular forms. At a second level, this book is designed to delineate Christian responsibility, not only for the butcheries and persecutions of the past, like the Spanish Portuguese Inquisitions, but also andspecifically for the destruction of six million Jews during the Holocaust. As a Christian, deeply committed to the faith of the Hebrew and Christian Scriptures, Professor Nicholls not only feels the rage for this historical travesty but also the moral, nay, the religious charge, to face up to the burden of this responsibility and to redress this wrong. Written in a scintillating and swift, stripped-down prose, this is a luminous and compelling book that could change forever Christian perception of (Professor José Faur, author, In the Shadow of History: Jews and Conversos at the Dawn of Modernity)

Professor Nicholls' history of the Christian origins and perpetuation of, and the church's continuing responsibility for, the antisemitic myth―including that myth's secularized and racist forms―is a marvel of contemporary historical and moral scholarship. We are given a comprehensive, definitive accounting of Christian hate for Jews from its beginnings to today―all in some 500 pages―together with compelling proposals for religious and theological reform and renewal. This historical exposition extends as well to the many moral, theological, political, and psychoanalytic dimensions of the question of antisemitism. We may expect this work to remain authoritative for a long time. It is a gem. (A. Roy Eckardt, University of Oxford)

In Part II, "The Growth of the Myth", Nicholls looks at the impact made by Paul and documents the slow but steady relegation of the Jews to a position of hatred and victimization and their role as scapegoat. Also included in this section of the book is a close look at the development of the notion of the Jew as a player in Christian theology. In Part III, "The Myth Secularized", Nicholls observes the "secularization" of antisemitism, from the age of Napoleon to the present. His conclusion is a pessimistic one, noting that "the Holocaust has not brought an end to anti-semitism. It still pervades European and North American culture". Christian Antisemitism: A History of Hate is an extraordinary document of historical research. It is also a moving statement by a former Christian theologian who has come face-to-face with the most painful aspects of the religious tradition in which he was raised.

A must for every Jewish library
By A Customer
Christian Anti-Semitism: A History of Hate, by William Nicholls. Jason Aronson, Inc. , 499 pp, $40.00.
In William F. Buckley's essay on anti-Semitism Bill is very troubled about some of his friends. In his heart of hearts he doesn't want to believe that these people, people he believes are decent humans, can really be anti-Semites. Nevertheless, he must honestly come to terms with the fact that these same people seem to be obsessed with Jews.
As a Jew born in the United States I always believed that I not only knew who I was as a Jew, but understood the non-Jewish world as well. There were, surely, some things I couldn't understand. It seemed that Christians could never talk about their religion without reference to mine. Whatever was positive in theirs was counterpoint to something negative in mine. More extraordinary was the fact that negative ideas that were ascribed to Judaism weren't even true. I always passed this off as ignorance on their part.
Professor Nicholls' book, Christian Anti-Semitism: A History of Hate, allowed me to see Bill Buckley's observation in a new light. It was not Joseph Sobran or Patrick Buchanan who were obsessed with Jews, but Christianity itself.
True to its title, a goodly portion of the book deals with the history of Christian anti-Semitism. In this sense the book can be compared to such classics as J.R. Marcus's The Jew in the Medieval World or J. Trachtenberg's The Devil and the Jews. Nicholls' real interest, however, is in the theological claims of Christianity and how they logically result in anti-Semitism.
Nicholls starts with Jesus himself. Building mostly on the work of contemporary scholar Geza Vermas, he draws a picture of Jesus not as a founder of a new religion, but as a Torah observant Jew of the first century.
Traditionally, if Jews mentioned Jesus at all, his name would be suffixed with "may his bones be ground to dust." I must admit that I still find it difficult to say his name without a bottle of Listerine close at hand. Nevertheless, our picture of this man has come to us through Christianity. Would it not be the ultimate irony if not only has Christianity been slandering Judaism, but that it has been slandering this man as well?
Nicholls deals one by one with the claims about Jesus made by Christians and their gospels. Did Jesus oppose the Jewish law and the rabbis of his day? Did Jesus claim to be the Messiah? To each of these questions and others he answers a resounding, No! The picture he does draw is that Jesus was one of a number of healers and miracle workers and preachers not unlike others of his time. It was also not unusual in times of troubles for some to look to such individuals as prophets or even the Messiah himself.
Even the earliest claims of the new movement were based on readings of the scriptures which were at variance with those of the rabbis of that time. The real substance of the book is how a messianic fervor surrounding one man became transformed into the Christian myth and why this myth was anti-Semitic.
Nothing based on Jewish tradition predicted a dead messiah. As time went on and Jesus did not return, the new sect looked for evidence of this new kind of messiah in the Torah. They came to see the "Old Testament" not as the Torah, but as a cryptogram of Christian prophecy. Non-Christian Jews had no reason to read the Torah in this strange way. Paul then took the critical step of seeking converts among the gentiles. Not only did he not require them to convert to Judaism first, but he strongly discouraged it. The church rapidly became non-Jewish. The gentile church claimed for itself the sole right of interpretation of the Jewish scripture. It claimed that its interpretation was the same as that of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. It claimed the Jews had willfully distorted the plain meaning of their own scriptures. The Jews must therefore have deserted G-d and their own covenant. The first anti-Semitic Christian act was, therefore, the theft of the Torah. The rest of the anti-Semitic claims were really an attempt to justify the first.
Nicholls lays out a detailed historical record in Christian Anti-Semitism: A History of Hate. Suffice it to say that anti-Semitism is not an ugly accretion to the pure religion of Christianity. It is one of its organizing principles.
Nicholls himself is from a Christian background and has great sympathy for those wishing to create a Christian theology that is not inherently anti-Semitic. He, however, does not believe it is possible, because any Christianity based on Jesus would have to deal with the real historical Jesus, the Jew. "To put it another way, there cannot be a Christ without Jesus....Contemporary Christians cannot ignore the historical Jesus. What we are coming to know about Jesus does not fit what Paul said about him."
Nicholls' book is an exciting, well-balanced read. The scholarship upon which his book is based is only now starting to be absorbed by Christians. Nicholls claims to be no prophet. I believe, however, if you wish to gain a glimpse of the future, you should read this book.

If you only get one book on this subject - get this one!!!
By E. Balogh
This is truly a seminal book. There is nothing else quite like it - and I've read many books on the subject. In it, William Nicholl traces anti-Jewish sentiment from its earliest political and theological genesis through to its almost inevitable result - the Holocaust. At least the first third of the book is devoted to a fascinating exploration of the life and times of Jesus seen from a clear-eyed and rational historical viewpoint. Then, in the final chapter the author goes back in time, period by period, to see what can be stripped away from Christianity in an attempt to see if it can be divorced from its inherent Anti-Jewishness. That chapter is, to put it mildly, hair-raising! This is an absolute must for any person interested in in the growth and development of Christian theology as well as anyone interested simply in truth. I have three copies: One for myself and two for loaners. All three are loaned out at the time of this writing. Five stars is not a high enough rating.

Devastating and harrowing work
By Peter Uys
Religion itself can become idolatry. When loyalty to a creed or church or rite takes the place of fidelity to God who demands loving kindness and righteous action, the religion is made into an object of worship that must be defended against criticism, even justifiable criticism based on verifiable facts. Those outside are mistrusted or hated by religious idolaters simply because they are not part of the community. Nothing is considered acceptable unless it fits within the bounds of the creed. People are not viewed in terms of their essential humanity. From there it is a tiny step to believing that it is right to murder them or be indifferent about their fate. We are seeing this today in the spread of terrorism around the globe. Religious idolatry is the worst enemy of spirituality. It ought to be obvious that if religion is to be shielded from its own tendency towards idolatry, it must be receptive to criticism and judged by its fruits as revealed in history. The king and the priest are not above the law in the Good Book; the greatest figures in the Judeo-Christian tradition, like Abraham, Moses and David, are presented with their flaws. Criticism of religion on theological, philosophical and historical grounds must thus be considered essential in opposing idolatry. The followers of a religion that resists criticism are in danger of becoming idolaters and ultimately fanatics.

This is one of the most intellectually honest books I have ever read. I realize that it will shock Christians as it triggered a profound spiritual exhaustion in me. But denial is not an option. Part One: Before The Myth, raises the questions if Jesus the Jew was the founder of Christianity, whether he was rejected by his people and the concept of the crucified Messiah. The first section deals with myth and history, biblical criticism, Jesus and His own people, the Synoptic problem, oral tradition, Albert Schweitzer's challenge, redaction criticism, checks on authenticity and the diversity of early Christianity. The second explores Judaism in the first century, Roman rule, the mission and message of Jesus, the Sermon on the Mount, Pharisees, opponents of Jesus, various parables, and Jesus and the Torah. The final section considers Jewish messianic expectations, language and society, the development of early ideas about Christ, what Jesus himself said about his mission, the Son of Man, the entry into Jerusalem, the trial of Jesus plus falsifications in the Gospels and what motivated them.

Part Two: The Growth of the Myth, consists of: Paul and the Beginning of Christianity, The True Israel: Battle for the Bible, Jews in a Christian World, Popular Paranoia and the Inquisition & Reformation. In the first section, Nicholls explores the early days of Christianity, resurrection visions, sectarian theology, the crucial break, mythmaking, the traditional interpretation, Paul's intentions, the question of a double covenant, James, Peter and different views in the early church. The Battle for the Bible deals with the break between Judaism and Christianity, editorial bias in the Gospels, different versions of the trial, John's Anti-Judaism, Anti-Judaism in the New Testament, the theology of supercessionism (replacement theology), 2nd century writers, Marcion and Tertullian.

The section titled Jews in a Christian World chronicles the ever increasing laws against the Jews, the codes of Theodosius and Justinian, fall of the Western Roman Empire, Bishop Ambrose, the canon law of the church, theological Anti-Judaism in the Church Fathers, the Christological interpretation of the New Testament, and Gregory the Great and the Jews. The next, Popular Paranoia, deals with Abelarde, the crusades, blood libel, charges of desecration of the host, the Fourth Lateran Council, the Black Death, the origins of the calumnies, pressures on the Christian Psyche, subconscious rage and rebellion, paranoid projection and the transmission of paranoid systems. This is of prime importance for gaining a psychological understanding. The section on the Inquisition & Reformation considers the fate of Spanish Jewry in the 15th century, the Council of Trent, the Reformation and the humanists.

Part Three: The Myth Secularized, is divided into The Napoleonic Bargain, Secular Antisemitism, the Churches in the 20th century, Old and New Antisemitism, and the possibility of ending Antisemitism. In the first, Nicholls analyses the new societies of modernity, liberal Anti-Judaism, the Enlightenment and its views on religion, Anti-Judaism of the philosophers, the French revolution, Congress of Vienna and progress towards emancipation. In the section on secular antisemitism, he looks at the leftwing Hegelians, Karl Marx, the new racial doctrines, the Dreyfuss affair, Russian antisemitism, antisemitic parties of Austria and Germany, and the matrix of Nazism. The role of the churches in the 20th century is considered with reference to the Holocaust and after, Pius XII, the rescuers, the response of the Catholic Church and the relation between it and the Jews in the 1990s, the World Council of Churches and the new theologies.

In the chapter Antisemitisms Old & New, the author comments on the survival of the traditional form, the leftwing variety, mutations, Holocaust denial, Anti-Zionism which he claims is the typical current mutation, media reporting on the Middle East conflict, Liberal antisemitism, that amongst the Black community in the USA, and the influence of Christian Liberalism on Jewish intellectuals. In the final chapter, he explores the possibilities of ending this ancient hatred. He considers Christian history, theology and its effects, removing Anti-Judaic accretions in the church, returning the Bible to the Jewish people, rethinking Christological interpretation of the Old Testament, earliest Christianity, theology and history, the alternatives for Christians and the looming choice between Jesus or Christianity.

There is an appendix of the three accounts of Peter's acclamation of Jesus as the Messiah, 37 pages of Notes arranged by chapter, a vast bibliography and a thorough index. Nowadays the main influences on the western public mind are secular "salvationist" ideologies that sprung from Christianity. Unfortunately they contain the virus without the antibodies provided by the Old Testament in traditional Christianity. And the collapse of political Marxism has only increased its potency as opiate of the intellectuals in various mutant forms. The message of this book is frightening; I encourage all people of good will to read it and act upon its recommendations. Other informative books on this subject are Our Hands are Stained with Blood by Michael L Brown, The Crucifixion of the Jews by Franklin H Littell and The Anguish of the Jews by Edward H Flannery.

Historical Dictionary of Ethiopia (Historical Dictionaries of Africa), by Thomas P. Ofcansky, David H. Shinn

Ethiopia is one of the world's oldest countries; its Rift Valley may be the location where the ancestors of humankind originated more than four million years ago. With a population of 67 million people today, it is the third most populous country on the African continent after Nigeria and Egypt. It is the source of 86 percent of the water reaching the Aswan Dam in Egypt, most of it carried by the amazing Blue Nile. Ethiopia offers major historical sites such as the pre-Christian palace at Yeha, the stele and tombs of the old Kingdom of Axum, and the rock-carved churches of Lalibela. For anyone interested in Ethiopia, this historical dictionary, through its individual and carefully cross-referenced entries, captures the importance and intrigue of this truly significant African nation. Historical Dictionary of Ethiopia appeals to all levels of readers, providing entries for each of Ethiopia's 85 ethnic groups and covering a broad range of cultural, political, and economic topics. Readers interested in the cultural aspects or who are planning to visit Ethiopia will find a wealth of entries on art, literature, handicrafts, music, dance, bird life, geography, and historic tourist sites. Practitioners in government and non-governmental organizations will find entries on pressing economic, social, and political issues such as HIV/AIDS, female circumcision , debt, human rights, and the environment. The important historical role of missionaries and the combination of conflict and cooperation between Christians and Muslims in the region are also issues reviewed. And, finally, many of the entries highlight relations between Ethiopia and her neighbors-Eritrea, Somalia, Somaliland, Djibouti, Kenya, and Sudan. In the bibliography, considerable emphasis has been placed on including both new and old materials covering all facets of Ethiopia, organized for easy identification by areas of major interest.

Review
This dictionary is a useful source of information on Ethiopia. It can be used alone for those who want basic questions answered on Ethiopia or as a resource that guides the way to other relevant sources. (Arba)

Ethiopia actually has suggested readings added at the end of some of the major articles, thus enormously increasing their value....Overall, the potential strength of volumes in this series, that they provide fairly regularly revised coverage for many countries where up-to-date reference material in English is lacking or out-of-date, needs to be recognised. (African Research & Documentation)

Recommended. All collections. (Choice)

Terrible
By gwaan
This Historical Dictionary is a joke.

Given the enormous amount of information regarding Ethiopian history, and the exhaustive Dictionaries of Ethiopian Biography produced by the Institute of Ethiopian Studies, David H. Shinn and Thomas P. Ofcansky's dictionary stands out as a poor, almost lazy attempt at producing a Historical reference book.

The entries in their dictionary are superficial to the very least, with extremely little information. The actual selection of entries is simply ridiculously short.

Now, if this book was worth $5, i'd get it. But i qualify this book as a true SCAM, given the pretensious $60 something price tag.

Believe me when i say all the skimpy, light information in this dictionary can be found in greater abundance and quality on wikipedia. In fact, the amount of entries regarding Ethiopian history on wikipedia is admirable, and in comparison this "golden priced" dictionary stands out as a cheeky waste of paper.

I'd love to give an Ehiopian history work a solid review, but this book simply fails miserably at anything else than emptying your pocket. Truly awful.

One note of thanks is deserved for Amazon, who kindly accepted my return and reinbursed the cost.

Nice reference material, but not exhaustive
By S. L. Freeman
I purchased this book to hopefully use as a research reference, but it has primarily become a nice book to have in my library. The dictionary section is useful as a quick reference to general information, but doesn't have quite everything that I expected. The bibliography is lacking as well, particularly in recent scholarly literature. The book has a beautiful cover, but for the price it's better to just use it at a library if necessary.

Creativity and Taoism: A Study of Chinese Philosophy, Art and Poetry, by Chung-yuan Chang

'In Creativity and Taoism, Chang Chung-yuan makes the elusive principle of Tao available to the western mind with objectivity, warmth, and depth of insight. It is an important contribution to the task of making the Taoist wisdom accessible to the western intellect'

- Ira Progoff

'No one can read Chang's book without experiencing a broadening of his mental horizons'

- John C. H. Wu, Philosophy East and West

'His interpretation of the Taoist roots of Ch'an has been presented with taste and learning that help to clear up many questions that must have occurred to anyone familiar with his subject. "The Spirit of the Valley" dwells in this quiet and gentle man who, as so rarely happens, actually embodies some of the philosophic traits of which he writes'

- Gerald Sykes

'If the end of reading is the enhancement of life, the enlargement of experience and understanding, then this book becomes an important step in that direction. Dr. Chang writes in a style both lucid and felicitous. He displays with becoming modesty a mastery of the field, its development and its ideas... There is hardly a page which does not give pleasure'

- Robert R. Kirsh, Los Angeles Times

'Professor Chang's study, a brilliant exposition and analysis, is concerned with the relevance and applicability of the Taoist view in Chinese artistic and intellectual creativity. Few other works facilitate so sensitive an understanding of creative impulse and expression in Chinese culture'

- Hyman Kublin, Library Journal

Simultaneously accessible and scholarly, this classic book considers the underlying philosophy and the aesthetics of Chinese art and poetry, the expression of the Taoist approach to existence. Chapters cover everything from the potential of creativity to the way tranquillity is reflected in Chinese poems and painting. Chung-yuan Chang's deceptively simple and always lucid narrative explores the relationship between the Tao and the creative arts, introducing classic paintings and poems to bring Taoism to life.

A Book to be Treasured and Savored
By DeeJay
I first found "Creativity and Taoism" in a used book store when I was a young woman. I wore it to shreds, studying and highlighting it. I found another copy and read it to shreds too. By then I found it online at Amazon and bought three copies, one for me and one for each of my adult children.

This book became a treasured companion over the years, the book I turned to for my daily meditation, and for inspiration when writing and drawing. The book I turn to when I want to tap into a sense of the sacred lying just below the surface of things, what the author refers to as the "invisible ground of sympathy." It's hard to quantify how much this book means to me.

One of the things I loved most was being introduced to some of the ancient Chinese artists and poets and their works. I am still profoundly affected by some of the paintings and poems found there, which I turn to again and again.

This is a scholarly book that is highly accessible, as well as a book to be savored slowly for its beauty and insight and wisdom. I highly recommend it to poets and artists and spiritual seekers, and anyone who wants a better understanding of Taoism and the creative process.

YES YES YES
By Wanda Russell
As an artist this book is something I have always longed for. Seems that our need to create is universal and that the Taoist connection to nature is to this day so right on. Another book to keep going back into as I grow in my art and practice in Taoist philosophy.

Decent book on great games in Yankee history
By LSmith
Rating:
3 of 5 stars (good)

Review:
Twenty current or former players for the New York Yankees are interviewed and asked to share the story of what was the best game he remembers while playing for the New York Yankees in this book by Dave Buscema. Because the interviews were done in 2004 or later, the time frame covered in the book is from the 1950’s to 2009; the latest game chronicled by current Yankee pitcher C.C. Sabbathia.

One chapter is the story of one player’s memorable game, and the format is the same for each chapter – an introduction to what the game is, a brief recap of the player’s life and career, the lead in to the game and then the game itself. The lead in may be a recap of the regular season before a playoff game or a story behind why the game is memorable for the player.

I found the better stories to be those of games you would not expect to be included by the player. For example, Mel Stottlemeyer, the long-time pitching coach who was a good pitcher for the Yankees in the early 1970’s, chose a regular season game in which he beat that season’s Cy Young winner, Vida Blue, during the middle of the 1971 season. Why did he choose that one? Because his young sons told him that morning that Dad didn’t have a chance to beat Vida Blue that day.

Another unexpected choice was in the chapter on Dave Righetti’s memorable game. It wasn’t the one that everyone else remembers – the no hitter against Boston on July 4, 1983. Instead, it was during the 1981 American League Championship Series against Oakland when he appeared in his first playoff game in front of family and friends. Most of the other games are the ones that you expect from the player interviewed, such as Reggie Jackson’s three home runs in game six of the 1977 World Series or Bucky Dent’s home run in the one-game playoff against the Red Sox in 1978.

I felt the book, while fun and easy to read, had the feel of being written by a fan who was very excited to be able to talk to his favorite Yankees. That is not necessarily a bad thing, but it felt at times like more of a Yankee booster publication instead of a book on the recent history of the franchise as seen through the eyes of the players. I also noted a factual error that is minor in the grand scheme of the book, but did make me question how much research and editing was done for the book. In the Righetti chapter, the Yankees defeated the Milwaukee Brewers in the 1981 Division Series, and Buscema stated that “the Brewers would go on to win their own World Series the following year.” That is incorrect – the Brewers lost the 1982 World Series in seven games to the St. Louis Cardinals. Little inaccuracies like that drive me crazy in non-fiction books.

Overall, though, the book is an easy read and one that Yankee fans will certainly want to add to their libraries as it recaps some memorable games in the history of the franchise.

Did I skim?
No.

Pace of the book:
It is a very quick read as the chapters are broken into short segments about the player and his career, the build up to the game remembered, then the game itself. These are all told from the viewpoint of the player interviewed.

Do I recommend?
Yankee fans, especially those who have followed the team since the 1970’s will enjoy this book as the memories of some great games come back to them.

Frazz: Cogito, Ergo Caulfield, by Jef Mallett

What happens when an eight-year-old mischievous boy genius becomes best friends with the brilliant-though-humble elementary school janitor? Pages upon pages of hilarious comic strips, of course! Caulfield gets a kick out of frustrating his mean old third-grade teacher, Mrs. Olsen, by cracking wise-guy jokes and facetious questions; his reward is detention, where he gets to spend time with the equally quick-witted janitor Frazz. The two spend conversations discussing everything from math to literature with funny insight accessible to readers of all ages. This e-book original collection of Frazz strips compiles the most amusing—and most touching moments as the friendship between the unlikely pair develops. Cogito, Ergo Caulfield is not only a celebration of creativity and clever humor, it also includes exclusive commentary from Frazz’s creator, Jef Mallet himself. Mallet’s work was nominated by the National Cartoonists Society for a Reuben division award for Best Newspaper Comic Strip in 2004, and Frazz has won two Wilbur Awards in 2003 and 2005, which honors excellence in communicating values and ethics. Indeed, within Frazz’s jokes and antics is the heart of the strip: an illuminative approach to learning, which is fun for kids and inevitable for adults.

Enjoyable, but not what I expected
By D.K. Henderson
My own fault; I should have read the description more carefully. But after waiting many years for additional Frazz collections, when I saw these three new titles I grabbed. I don't regret buying them, they're a lot of fun.
However...WHY AREN'T THERE MORE COLLECTIONS??!!! Why have they only published 3 collections, plus these three specialty Kindle publications? By my reckoning, at a year per collection, starting in 2005, we should should have at least 8-going-on-9 collections by now. I adore this strip. I want more Frazz!!!

Short but satisfying
By NF
Frazz, by Jef Mallett, is one of the best comic strips of the past few decades, possibly even up there with the immortal Calvin & Hobbes. Frazz is a songwriter who has a side career as a janitor at Bryson Elementary School, or perhaps it's more accurate to describe it as the other way around.

Frazz, as portrayed by Mallett, is still pretty much a kid himself. He remains a janitor, even though his songwriting career is successful enough that he doesn't need to, because he genuinely loves the kids, particularly one brash youth named Caulfield. Caulfield is brilliant and bored but he has an instant and deep rapport with the gawky janitor. The rest of the supporting cast includes Miss Plainwell, the first-grade teacher, whom Frazz is smitten with, Mrs. Trevino, the second-grade teacher, Mrs. Olsen, the third-grade teacher and the bane of Caulfield's existence (and vice versa), Mr. Burke, the fourth-grade teacher, Mr. Spaetzle, the Principal, and Coach Hacker, the gym teacher. In addition to his love of children and songwriting, Frazz is an avid cyclist and triathlon competitor.

What I like most about the strip is that Mallett really gets children right, their playfulness, their living in their own world, where only adults who have a touch of the child in them can enter. Frazz is someone I would love to hang out with, with and without the kids. There is widespread speculation that Mallett designed Frazz as an adult Calvin, from Calvin & Hobbes, a brilliant underachiever who lives in his own world. There is something to be said for this but Mallett has always denied it and I think the work stands on its own very well. There is reason to believe that Frazz is more closely modeled after Mallett, hiimself, who is also an avid cyclist and triathlonist, and who clearly has not lost touch with his inner child. There are numerous literary and musical references scattered throughout the strip and I occasionally find myself looking up an obscure reference.

Frazz was first released in book form in 2005, with two sequels, the last of which was published in 2008. This new book is one of three new Kindle editions, the first available since that third volume. I have no idea why they stopped publishing the books but I wish they had not, as I've re-read all three of those volumes multiple times, each time feeling like I was returning to visit old and very dear friends.

This new Kindle edition is quite short, only 60 pages, each of which contains just a single cartoon, many of them with a brief explanatory blurb from the author. While still very entertaining, and very worth the price, I don't think it is quite up to the standard Mallett set in the earlier books. Still, any strip that includes this little gem...

Miss Plainwell: Are you OK?
Mrs. Olsen: Oh, my sciatic nerve is bugging me.
Frazz: That's the big nerve that starts in the upper part of the back of her leg.
Caulfield: Oh, so she's putting up with a big pain in the ...
Frazz: But of course.
Caulfield (appalled): I've been replaced?!

...is worth a look. I highly recommend the first three Frazz books, in particular. I'm docking this book two stars: one because there isn't that much content and the other because, frankly, I suspect that Mallett is starting to run out of ideas. There is some good stuff here but it doesn't quite match what he's done before.

A sassy collection of vivid and moving stores portraying edgy modern lives in highly-charged relationships. Not for the faint of heart, Crane's humour has a dark, almost sinister, edge. However, her tired pessimism is tempered with grace and frequent avenues of hope. A profusion of sex delivers surprises, not all of them pleasant. A new father, shopping for groceries with his baby and a hangover, worries that the child may not actually be his. An ultrasound technician, envious of her co-worker's sex life, has an unexpected second encounter with a creepy male patient. The wife of a hockey player is faced with his ambiguous sexuality. A young woman waits her turn at an abortion clinic, harbouring the secret that the baby's father might not be the boyfriend sitting beside her. These wonderfully-drawn characters sweep the reader into their anxious and often funny lives. Sophisticated story-telling makes the most complicated situations crystal clear and a pleasure to read. Crane's male points of view are as effective as the female. Her endings are just right and satisfying. Joint the Cult of Quick Repair and prepare to see another side of all-too-familiar contemporary life, in all its fraught and aching glory.

Reach for the Top: The Turbulent Life of Laurence Harvey (The Scarecrow Filmmakers Series), by Anne Sinai

The popular screen and stage star Laurence Harvey (1928-1973) is best remembered for his stellar performance in the film The Manchurian Candidate—a 20th century classic. Of his 50 films, Room At the Top not only brought sexual permissiveness to American and British screens and an Oscar nomination, but it also branded him a heartthrob sensation.

For all his fame and fortune, Harvey's short life was riddled with controversy, demonized by critics, and fraught with tragedy. In this revealing biography by Harvey's sister-in-law, readers are provided a close-up view of his career, his three marriages and his longtime sexual affair with one of his male producers. It also details his battle with cancer and his failure to acknowledge its seriousness.

Packed with personal anecdotes, more than twenty black and white photographs, and a filmography, Reach for the Top: The Turbulent Life of Laurence Harvey will fascinate film students, scholars, and fans of the actor.

Not Enough Stars
By Kevin Killian
Au contraire, the book is extremely detailed and makes use of all the letters that Lawrence Harvey wrote his family. Anne Sinai reads between the lines and shows us that Harvey was indeed pretended to have been known as "Larushka" as a child, but he dared not sign letters to his family with that endearing diminutive, because he made it all up, God knows why.

His ambition and his sexual predilections made him frantic to be loved, and the early part of the book, where he leaves SA and goes to London to find work is quite moving in its clear-eyed case study of a young man on the make. No wonder he did so well, later on, playing Joe Lapmton in ROOM AT THE TOP. Joe's ambition and lying ways could have been patterned on Harvey's life. He seems to have been attracted to a, cute guys, b, older rich guys, and then c, older women who were fair and severe with him, just as his mother was. His marriage to Margaret Leighton is finally explained in several incisive Sinai chapters here, as well as his long term love affair with the much older soubrette Hermione Baddeley. When he became an international star with ROOM AT THE TOP, he just seemed to live more frantically, perhaps because he was under increased scrutiny and could now only rarely have a "night out with the boys."

James Woolf, the bouyant film producer who took Harvey under his wing and made him a huge success by careful placement, flying him to Hollywood over and over again until Warner took an option, winds up as the hero of the book, the one man who never let his boy down, and whose death spelled the end of Harvey's brief stardom. Sinai tells us innumerable anecdotes about the stars Harvey was involved with, but even more tantalizing are her accounts of the movies he wound up abandoning, including one which would have cast him as the man torn between Lana Turner (!) and Jennifer Jones (!!!!), a hot seat if ever there was one.

Highly recommended even though, once he becomes a star, Sinai rushes through the remainder of his career as though the house was on fire and she had to finish the book quickly to get a pail of water. He was so great--or so bad--that he deserves a slower pace, something more Mediterranean, not this Coney Island roller coaster of a climax.

Wonderfully researched book about a faded star
By Lady Blakeney
I first came across Laurence Harvey in the early '90s, when my seventh grade history class was shown John Wayne's "The Alamo". He was playing Col. William Barret Travis, and I remember thinking, "Wow! He's pretty good." It was some years later that I encountered "The Manchurian Candidate". Again, I was struck by how well Harvey handled the role, this time of a brainwashed assassin. He now seems to be almost a one-hit wonder (he was nominated for an Oscar only once, for "Room at the Top").
This biography by Anne Sinai, Harvey's sister-in-law, reveals a great deal about his brief but unquestionably "colorful" life. While it is interesting to see how he rose up from an obscurity in a Jewish community in South Africa, it is also easy to see why many people who worked with him ended up severely disliking him. His personality (especially in his early life) was a mixture of cut-throat ambition and downright arrogance, and he was known for leading a very extravagant lifestyle. But on the flip side, he also could be funny, generous, and caring. And there's no denying he had talent. The irony lies in the fact that, despite striving for the top, he never really managed to stake his claim there.
The book is fairly long and isn't a light read, but it is very well researched and written. I would have liked more information about his experiences working on a few films--namely "The Alamo"; Col. Travis will always remain my favorite of his roles--but Sinai provides a good chunck of information nonetheless. For those who are interested in the olden days of Hollywood stars, or (like me) are interested in an actor the world seems to have forgotten, then this book is worth your while.

Reach for Mediocrity
By Lidgemeister
I'm afraid I will have to agree with moviefan, Grell. This is a perfect example of why one's biography should not be written by a relative. As mentioned, the author oddly fails to mention within the pages that she is Harvey's sister in law. One can only assume that old family grudges or resentments lay behind what seems to be the author's distaste for her subject.

There is precious little information on Harvey's films (barely a page on Darling) and most quotes from his co-stars are lifted from other biographies.

The author would have made a wonderful source of information for a less biased and more talented biographer. I cannot recommend spending anything near full price for this bio, though I could justify a few dollars to read about Harvey's early life. Unfortunately, it is so clear that the author has an ax to grind, that I wasn't even sure her descriptions of Harvey's "Mommy Dearest" mother were accurate or the ultimate revenge against her own mother-in law.
