Great book goes beyond metal stamping!

Interweave Press just sent me a preview copy of this fantastic new book-with-DVD by Lisa Niven Kelly. I was very curious to see what the artist/author had to say about the technique of stamping letters and symbols into metal, especially since it seems such a simple, straightforward process that hardly merits coverage in a 136-page book.
I just love it when my initial impressions are proved wrong... that means I've learned something new, and I love to learn! The contents of Stamped Metal Jewelry (SMJ) go far beyond what the title suggests. Besides providing 19 metal and mixed-media jewelry projects, a brief but inspiring gallery of stamped jewelry, resources, and a tools/materials section, this book does a very good job of laying out the basics of beginning metalsmithing and wirework. For this reason alone, I feel confident recommending SMJ to novice jewelry artists seeking instruction in these areas.
First, let me comment on the tools section: very thorough, well done, informative, important information is conveyed here. Experienced jewelry artists may feel that this chapter can be skipped, but I suggest having a look anyway--some interesting tools are discussed that may be unfamiliar to you. Consider the fun texture hammers and large wrap-n-tap pliers on page 12, tube-cutting pliers on the following page, hole-punch pliers, scribe, bracelet bending pliers, sanding sticks, and leather-working tools.
Now on to my favorite chapter segments: Basic Metalsmithing Techniques. The author addresses hammering and texturing first, suggesting the use of metal stamps for adding texture to metal besides the obvious usage of adding text or designs. She discusses using a riveting hammer and the ball end of a chasing hammer to create texture, and using hard metal objects and a brass-head hammer to forge textured designs into soft metal sheet.
Cutting and sawing metal (with a helpful blade-size guide) take up one page; hole punching and drilling (with another helpful guide: drill bits), how to dap (doming metal shapes), and riveting follow. I love the riveting section because the author carefully describes forming wire rivets, nail-head rivets, and tube rivets, with big photos making every step crystal-clear.
The metalsmithing section concludes with a discussion of oxidizing and polishing methods and annealing (softening metal with heat). If you read the book carefully up through page 31 and practice all the techniques presented, you will be well on your way to becoming an informed metal jewelry artist.
The "main event" follows: six pages devoted to stamping text and designs into metal. Lisa has been perfecting this skill for years, so naturally she has a few things to say about safety, work station set-up, the basics of stamping (alignment, centering, stamping with design stamps, and the author's own tilt-n-tap method--also demoed on the DVD).
That's the heart of the book, really, and if you read it carefully and follow the author's instructions, you can immediately start stamping metal with confidence. But we're just getting started: page 38 begins the projects section, with 19 jewelry designs from simple to more complex and challenging. Once you stamp a simple pendant, you'll be ready to try making an I.D. bracelet, stamped pre-fab rings, linked bracelets and bangles, stamped and riveted rings, a really cool textured metal pendant framed with coiled wire and beads, a leather cuff, and much more.
I really appreciate the author's inclusion of work from other designers such as Kriss Silva, Janice Berkebile, Lisa Claxton, Kate Ferrant Richbourg, Tracy Stanley, and Connie Fox. These artists contributed some unique ideas and jewelry projects you may recognize from the workshops they teach at bead events across the US, such as Janice's famed "Crown Jewel" pendant.
A short gallery and two pages of wirework basics finish the book, which is indexed. But wait--there's more! A 33-minute instructional DVD accompanies SMJ, featuring the author as she goes over the use of tools, basic stamping techniques, tilt-n-tap (very helpful!), and a bonus jewelry project not included in the book. You don't want to miss it. Although Lisa has covered her subject with great care in her book, sometimes seeing the basic techniques in action can really help make everything more clear. Be sure to watch the DVD, practice the basic techniques demonstrated, and you're ready to make beautiful jewelry using wire, sheet metal, leather, rivets, and more.

Way back, when I was first teaching myself how to make jewelry with a few books and a lot of assistance from online sources, I came across Lisa Niven Kelly on the internet. She hadn't even established her fantastically popular online store yet.

I remember when Lisa had two famous projects: her super pretty wide cuff, and her stamped bangle with a clasp. I fell in love with both of them. I went to my husband Jim and BEGGED him to get me these projects (which were sold as kits with printed out instructions, at the time) plus all the tools, and everything I would need, so I could learn from my heroine, Lisa Niven Kelly. Those kits and tools were what I received for Christmas that year! It was a whole new world for me!

I am delighted to be able to review this wonderful book and DVD, as Lisa Niven Kelly remains the resident All Star at teaching stamping combined with certain kinds or wire work in jewelry design. I continue to be one of her loyal followers. She never quits devising new fantastic creations for us to want to make! Many of them are offered in this fine new book!

Therefore to have a hard copy book available of her careful yet assertive manner of teaching is a pleasure. To have these new projects to try is a total joy!

All the little things I might have forgotten, or wanted to know and never got the chance to learn from the author, are in here. On the 35 minute DVD, which has two projects, there are some great examples of some of her tips. One is how to center a word properly when you stamp. Another good one is how to stamp with a decorative stamp, which is more difficult than a letter of the alphabet, and make it come out completely perfect. I watched the DVD very closely and learned a lot. It is definitely a worthwhile addition to the book.

The author stresses that you practice, first, on copper blanks or with copper wire so that you don't waste good money on sterling silver. She also explains safety precautions very clearly in the book and on the DVD, particularly when you are oxidizing.

The introduction conveys her excitement at being able to share all her years of experience with the reader. She explains how "compatible" stamping is with other forms of wire work. She explains that within the book you will learn how to rivet, hammer,and dapp, as well as stamp, and that the stamping "adds that little extra something that makes your design special and truly personal".

I agree! The very first "say it on your wrist" bangle I made said "The Ruse" on it. It had a few spiral designs, and a clasp. The Ruse is the name of my son's band. I gave it to his girlfriend, who is now his wife. Wherever she wore it, all her friends would comment on it and ask her how to get one. These bangles thoroughly convey your thoughts, when you make one. When you yourself learn to stamp, your love of what you are doing will be expressed in such a great manner!

The projects in the book are very flexible and so pretty! It is wonderful to learn to control a hammer properly and gives the reader a sense of empowerment when creating jewelry, as well. I find it to be like meditation, and enjoy feeling strong as I make stamped jewelry. I think it is cool, yet feminine to be able to do this well.
In Stamped Metal Jewelry, I particularly like the textured metal pendant. As an introduction to this lovely piece, the author comes right out and says, "This project appeals to sculptural wire fans who like very few rules". I am certainly drawn to that observation!Additionally, well made, sturdy jewelry is a must in my opinion, and the author always delivers the goods on sturdiness! This piece is terrific and unique. You will love it.
Another piece the reader will love is Lisa's friend's, Tracy Stanly's, "Simply Charming" charm bracelet. It includes instructions on how to make the graceful links which hold together the actual bracelet, and all the stamped pieces which make up the charms, plus an assortment of beads to mix up textures and lengths. It is a good example of another stamper's fabulous style.
At the end of the project, which is very well photographed, there is a section called, "Charmed, I'm sure!" which gives further inspiration on popular charm bracelet themes. The ideas are all excellent. They will bolster your enthusiasm in your ongoing work on a particular charm bracelet you are making.

I like the very clear techniques posted next to each each project as well.
I also love the "make it your own" posts the author offers after the very clear step out photos which show how to make each project.

If you have never heard of Lisa Niven Kelly, and you think you would like to try stamping, you have come to the right place. She is the expert's expert. This is a fine way to learn from her. This book, Stamped Metal Jewelry, creative techniques and designs for making custom jewelry, with its accompanying DVD, is totally wonderful. Short of taking a class at a bead show with the author, which is impossible for many of us, we have it all right here. Lisa Niven Kelly has real talent and she shares it willingly and abundantly with the reader. She also has included a beautiful gallery at the end of the book of inspirational work from her friends. I am thrilled with this book!

Fantastic book with an awesome DVD !

I absolutely love this book! It thoroughly explains each project in easy to understand terms. I like how they tell you exactly what gauge wire you need including the riveting wire. Unfortunately not all books are like this one. I have run into several that had great projects and they would say sterling wire but they wouldn't say what gauge you needed to make the project or even worse they would show you beautiful projects and they will say for instance use round or square lamp work beads but they wouldn't tell you where they got them at. Not in this book. This book tells you every step of the way what gauge wire you need and the tools needed and at the back of the book it tells you a list of suppliers. One of my favorite aspects of the DVD is that it has a bonus project on it that isn't in the book. Lisa Niven Kelly spoke very clearly and the DVD was done perfect. It showed her hands as she was doing the work. What was nice was that when she made a mistake she would tell you what to do so that you won't make the same mistake she did. She even shows you how to rivet on the DVD. I have always wanted to learn to rivet. I thought it was all about metal stamping but when I saw that she was going to show you how to rivet, I was even more excited. I guarantee if you buy this book you are going to love it. I can't think of a single item that was left out of the book or the DVD. It is absolutely wonderful. I will definitely keep this one in my library of books. This is one I definitely don't want to part with.

Norris (education, Nicholls State U.) argues that teachers and educators at all levels are the most mistreated professionals in American society. From the public perceptions of the work they do, the societal role they serve, what is expected of them professionally, how they are compensated, and the fact that expectations are imposed on them that would never be tolerated by comparably educated professionals in the private sector, teachers have gotten the shaft on just about everything. He argues that the vague standards imposed on teachers come from poor planning and bad research and criticizes the efforts of the past 30 years to push state- and nationwide "standards and accountability." Similar criticism is voiced about the movement for standardized tests. (Reference and Research Book News)

About the Author
Norman Dale Norris, a 23-year veteran of the classroom, began his career as a music instructor before moving into school management and instructional leadership. He still continues to instruct in music in the Orleans Parish Public School system, as well as serving as an instructor in education at both Nicholls State University and the University of Phoenix. He counts quantitative and qualitative methods, research design, curriculum reform, and policy analysis among his professional interests. He has also presented widely on HIV and AIDS awareness.

A Must Read

Dr. Norris' book about the mistreatment of American educators is very interesting and should be read by all who have children in schools, make policies for public school teachers, or are employed in public schools. It's refreshing to see the truth as experienced by someone in the trenches. Many misconceptions are addressed. The book is very easy to read because of the way it is written. He is obviously very experienced and has the best interest for all involved in education at the forefront.

About the Author
Giovanni Carmelo Verga (Catania, 2 settembre 1840 – Catania, 27 gennaio 1922) è stato uno scrittore e drammaturgo italiano, considerato il maggior esponente della corrente letteraria del verismo. La data di nascita di Giovanni Verga non è specificata, ma si pensa che sia nato o il 31 agosto 1840 o il 2 settembre 1840 da una famiglia di piccoli proprietari terrieri: fu registrato all'anagrafe di Catania. Il padre, Giovanni Battista Catalano, era di Vizzini, dove la famiglia Verga - di lontane ascendenze spagnole, visto che erano giunti in Sicilia col nome di Vegas nel 1282 circa - aveva delle proprietà, e discendeva dal ramo cadetto della famiglia alla quale appartenevano anche i baroni di Fontanabianca; la madre si chiamava Caterina Di Mauro e apparteneva ad una famiglia borghese di Catania. Il nonno di Giovanni, come testimonia il De Roberto in un articolo raccolto, insieme a molti altri, in un volume a cura di Carmelo Musumarra, era stato carbonaro e, nel 1812, eletto deputato per Vizzini al primo Parlamento Siciliano. Verga aveva due fratelli, Mario e Pietro. Rappresentano da sempre motivo di acceso dibattito la questione riguardante l'esatto luogo di nascita di Giovanni Verga, nonché la data dell'evento; benché gran parte dei testi lo collochino a Catania, basandosi sul contenuto dell'atto di nascita, esistono fondate argomentazioni sulla base delle quali è possibile ritenere che essa sia avvenuta nei pressi di Vizzini. La seconda tesi, secondo cui Verga sarebbe nato in un podere di campagna, di proprietà dello zio don Salvatore, in contrada Tièpidi (una zona di campagna a pochi chilometri dal centro abitato di Vizzini, citata dall'autore verista nei suo scritti col nome di Tebidi o Tèpidi), poggia su diverse constatazioni.

This is a great masterpiece of Italian realism and Verga's best work

This is a great masterpiece of Italian realism and Verga's best work. It is the beginning of the Italian novels of the south and in particular the village life of Sicilia. Levi's Christ Stopped at Eboli, Lampedusa's Gatopardo, Scia Scia etc. all find their roots in Verga. It is not an easy read, almost Faulknerian (Faulkner may well have read Lawrence's translation) in its demands on the reader. But well worth the trouble and a must for anyone seriously interested in Italian fiction. D.H. Lawrence's translation is wonderful- it takes no prisoners- if anything it's too literal. I read it and the original Italian side by side and admire and respect his achievement. Rarely do we get such a high quality of both author and translator.

The setting and the people of rural Italy at the end of the last century is thoroughly and thoughfully depicted. The story itself could be told rather quickly, but here it is told in great detail.

A great introductory book with long term benefits

IBM Lotus Notes 8.5.3 How-to is a short book by computer standards. It's 68 pages and includes a lot of illustrations. This meant that I could literally read it during a one-way trip to work on the bus.

For the most part however its short length is good because it manages to introduce many concepts not found in books several times its size and deals with them quickly in a non talky way. It's straight down to business.

The book doesn't identify a single audience but rather targets simple, intermediate and advanced users. This allows you to get a lot of long-term use out of the book but it also means that for "simple users", reading through the book cover-to-cover isn't really an option. For example, the book jumps straight from a chapter on mail customization into replication and then modifying INI file settings.

Simple users are much better off picking the chapters that are marked "simple" and sticking with them. This is easy though because the chapter headings include tags which indicate the level at which they are pitched;

Arguably, the best chapter is the last one where Barry talks about how to settle Outlook users into Notes. Having been on Notes for so many years myself, I've forgotten how alien it can sometimes seem to newbies but I'm always reminded as soon as a new ex-outlook employee starts. That last chapter will hopefully change all that and get those new users up and running in no time.

The book doesn't shy away from many of the more complex user-topics, like managed replication and widgets and it covers some very useful material in other areas too, like managing multiple signatures on your mail.

This is a great little book which every IT and HR department should have. It's a great "up and running" guide to Lotus Notes 8.5.3 and because of the advanced content, it has long term benefits too.

Not a smooth read, but filled with great tips!

Instant IBM Lotus Notes 8.5.3 How-to is the latest Lotus Notes title out of Packt Publishing. If you are new to the How-to series, they are the Packt equivalent to the O'Reilly pocket guides.

This short to-the-point book will likely be a welcome sight to end-users who tend to have little to no interest in the massive tomes that are usually published. Each chapter follows an easy to understand format of problem or topic, followed by "Getting ready", "How to do it", "How it works", and finally "There's more". When used properly, this formula can make it easy for the reader to find quick answers to specific topics or problems. Sadly, these sections really are not used to their full extent in many chapters. For instance, the chapter Mastering Calendar and To-Dos uses calendar federation as its "How to do it" with the real calendar mastering tips in the "There's more" section. Maybe it's me, but it just doesn't read smooth.

Now, that said, it doesn't mean that this book is bad. In fact, there are many very useful tips. I would go so far as to say that I would be quite happy if every one of my customer's end-users had this book on their desk. You just need to look past this books quirks and you'll find some wonderful nuggets of information.

Quasi-useful; not for tech-savvy folks

Ehhh...there are a handful of things in here that aren't patently obvious to the average computer user. But on the whole, this book is incredibly underwhelming. I'm a savvy Outlook user who is now forced to use Notes; I was hoping this book would be a primer to get me started on becoming a power user here, too.

I just paid $11 for a Kindle version of this book; it took me half an hour to work through the entire thing. What I wanted, but didn't get, just for starters:

- Keyboard shortcuts
- How to handle calendar messages in the inbox
- Archiving tips

Meh. Find another one. It's written well-enough, but if you're a sophisticated user you'll be disappointed.

About the Author
Howard Worsley is a researcher, a teacher and a priest. He gained a BA in English at Manchester University and followed this with an MA in Theology at Nottingham University and a PhD in Education at Birmingham University. His long-term research interest is to uncover the original vision seen by children in encountering what adults call "spiritual reality". Howard is currently the Diocesan Director of Education for Southwell & Nottingham and Chair of the National Association of Church Directors of Education. He lives in Nottinghamshire with his wife, Ruth, a parish vicar, and is father to three sons with whom he variously explores the world by canoe, bike or foot.

WONDERFUL!

Dr Worsley has certainly helped us better understand children and their ideas and beliefs about God. His examples are interesting to read and reflect on especially for those of us with children. It's a pleasure to read a book written in a writing style that is both accessible and clear. I wonder if he'll have the time and energy to write such a book about children of other religions?

Great for children ministry workers

I am an intern for our children's ministry at my church and for part of my clients class I had to read a text. I choose this book out of curiosity of what might be said of the different stories. : can closely relate to the research as teaching children in the church for several years has been amusing in so many ways. This was a great read!

Across the United States, the issue of immigration has generated rancorous debate and divided communities. Many states and municipalities have passed restrictive legislation that erodes any sense of community. Against the Tide tells the story of Jupiter, Florida, a coastal town of approximately 50,000 that has taken a different path.
    At the beginning of the twenty-first century, Jupiter was in the throes of immigration debates. A decade earlier, this small town had experienced an influx of migrants from Mexico and Guatemala. Immigrants seeking work gathered daily on one of the city’s main streets, creating an ad-hoc, open-air labor market that generated complaints and health and human safety concerns. What began as a local debate rapidly escalated as Jupiter’s situation was thrust into the media spotlight and attracted the attention of state and national anti-immigrant groups. But then something unexpected happened: immigrants, neighborhood residents, university faculty and students, and town representatives joined together to mediate community tensions and successfully moved the informal labor market to the new El Sol Neighborhood Resource Center.
    Timothy J. Steigenga, who helped found the center, and Lazo de la Vega, who organized students in support of its mission, describe how El Sol engaged the residents of Jupiter in a two-way process of immigrant integration and helped build trust on both sides. By examining one city’s search for a positive public policy solution, Against the Tide offers valuable practical lessons for other communities confronting similar challenges.

grassroots organizing at its best

Like gun control, abortion, and taxes, the issue of illegal immigration is often at the center of political conflict in this country. In the absence of any coherent national immigration policy, small communities are left to fend for themselves, struggling to absorb new arrivals who come seeking better lives for themselves and their families. This rational, calm, lucid, thoroughly compelling account of one town's remarkably effective solution to a national problem should be required reading for anyone, of any political persuasion, interested in this issue. A breath of fresh air.

Solving Immigrant problems humanely

Against the Tide: Immigrant Laborers, and Community in Jupiter, Florida by Sandra Lazo de la Vega and Timothy J. Steigenga.

This is an uplifting story of how liberals and conservatives joined forces to humanly address immigrant issues in a Florida community. By avoiding the political bumper sticker politics of our “do nothing Congress,” Jupiter, Florida was able to solve immigrant problems faced by many American cities.

The El Sol center matches employer needs with employee skills. Day workers no longer hang out on street corners. Violent crime is down. Crimes against immigrants, like cheating them out of wages, are down. Jupiter immigrants get vaccinations and preventive health care. They learn English at a faster rate than immigrants in other communities.

Unlike liberal communities that declared themselves sanctuary cities or right wing communities that pass extreme anti-immigrant laws, Jupiter has taken a common sense approach to “manage the actual day-to-day issues” of their immigrant population. In doing so, Jupiter has avoided the million dollar lawsuits other cites have suffered defending unconstitutional lawsuits. Nor has Jupiter’s local economy collapsed when immigrants are driven away.

Racism and anti-immigrant fears still exist in Jupiter. But cooperation and trust between long term residents and recent immigrants is much improved compared to a decade ago and far better than in communities that allowed national politics to spread hate and interfere with solving local every day problems.

While this book is primarily a case study, it also gives the reader some insight into larger macro immigration issues. Why immigrants risk great peril to come here is told in the story of cousins Ulises and José. While border patrols are designed to keep undocumented immigrants out, they also prevent immigrants from returning home.

“Against the Tide” addresses stereotypes and myths. Immigrants commit less, not more, crime than natural born citizens. More often they are victims of crimes by employers and others who see them as easy targets. Not only does their work help our American economy, but their strong family ties and practice of sending money back home also improve the economies of their homeland.

Jupiter’s success did not come quickly or easily. Churches, community groups, schools, police, and liberals and conservatives had to learn how to work together and trust each other. But “Against the Tide” gives us a blueprint for how other communities might deal with immigrants in a humane and positive manner.

In a recent visit to Jupiter, I was able to tour the El Sol center with coauthor, Sandra Lazo de la Vega as my guide. And in full disclosure, my nephew is in a relationship with the coauthor.

A very profound and informative book

This should be required reading for any community dealing with current immigration issues, as well as for anyone who wants a better understanding of this subject.
