As an alternative he promotes freedom that is finite, realistically libertarian, and relational as most compatible with the character of human beings that are partially self-creating and self-determining. Contributing to this position is the view that an infinitely temporal God, by character and desire, participates in human life in a way that ensures the requisite space for authentic decision making, from which emerges genuinely novel possibilities for human life. This dynamic has implications for the continued development of the human species and the quality of life in the cosmos as a whole.

Michael Miller argues instead for views of God's creativity and humanity's limited self-creativity that make good on the promise of genuine freedom. Michael Miller’s attempt to provide an understanding of freedom in what he calls a “realistic” libertarian manner is a refreshingly honest series of studied reflections on how we can begin to re-appropriate our Christian traditions in ways that promote authentic freedom. His abiding concern throughout the text is that “the denial of freedom, which has characterized life in many parts of the world, has been perpetrated not simply because the oppressors misused theological concepts, especially the grounding concept of God, but because many traditional theological concepts, including that of ‘God’, lend themselves to oppressive use.” This is a bold statement and his text is a successful attempt to support this claim. Professor Miller’s dialogues with a range of interlocutors in philosophy, sociology, cultural theory and theology give the reader wonderful critical insights into historical and contemporary perspectives on this issue. If you carefully follow his argument you are compelled to engage his search for a realistic realignment of our theological endeavor in support of authentic freedom. This is done not only through a revision of the theological concepts used to understand God, but also through practical suggestions for Christian living, given towards the end of the book. Of special significance in this text, to my mind, is Professor Miller’s privileging of thinkers and theologians from his native context, the Caribbean. All who engage the task of re-envisioning theological concepts especially as they inform Christian practice in the service of the marginalized should read this book. Die Reihenfolge der Exegeseschritte ist so gewählt, dass die Erkenntnisse der vorhergehenden, für ein Erarbeiten der nachfolgenden Untersuchung als Grundlage dient.

Das Evangelium nach Matthäus wurde etwa 75-90 n. Chr. verfasst und wendet sich vor allem an jüdische Gemeinden. Das Evangelium verarbeitet Themen wie das Verhältnis des Christusglaubens zum Alten Testament und zum alten Gottesglauben1. Jüdische Tradition spielt im Matthäus-Evangelium eine große Rolle und daher werde ich mich zunächst mit den Elementen des Textes beschäftigen, die typisch für diese Tradition und typisch für Matthäus sind. Die Wundergeschichte, die in Matthäus 8,5-13 erzählt wird, wirft die Frage auf, we lche Rolle das Wunder in der Geschichte spielt und wie Wundergeschichten mit heutigem Wissen verstanden werden können. Wundergeschichten werden von der Kirche heute oft dazu verwendet, den Menschen Mut zum Glauben zu geben, indem sie uns anregen über eigene Erfahrungen in Bezug auf „Wunder" nachzudenken. Im Folgenden verwende ich für die Evangelisten Matthäus, Markus, Lukas und Johannes die gebräuchlichen Abkürzungen Mt, Mk, Lk und Joh.

Both the crime and Herbert Niccolls's eventual sentence of life imprisonment at the Washington State Penitentiary in Walla Walla drew national attention, only to be buried later in local archives.

Journalist Nancy Bartley has conducted extensive research to construct a compelling narrative of the events and characters that make this a unique episode in the history of criminal justice in the United States. Niccolls became a cause for Father Flanagan of Boys Town,who took to the airwaves, imploring listeners to write Governor Hartley on the boy's behalf. The bitter campaign put Hartley in such a negative light that he lost his bid for reelection. Under a new and progressive warden, Niccolls thrived in prison. Inmates like physician Peter Miller and literary agent James Ashe became his tutors, finding that Niccolls had an insatiable appetite for knowledge. During the deadly 1934 prison riot at Walla Walla, several prisoners kept him from harm.

Niccolls was finally released from prison in his early twenties. He went to work at 20th Century Fox in Hollywood, where he kept his secret for the rest of his long life. The Boy Who Shot the Sheriff explores this little-known story of a young boy's fate in the juvenile justice system during the bloodiest years in the nation's penitentiaries.

Great history of the begining of the juvanial offender sysytem.

This book offered a lot of history not only of the system for offenders of that time, but also the poverty and lack of knowing between right and wrong. Children only know what they have been taught and that is still true today as it was then.
Im also from eastern Washington and I was intrigued about the judicial system that was in place here and across the country at this time.
I have passed this book on to many friends and they have enjoyed it as much as I did.

Interesting to read the story I had heard about. It is sad that the author did not interview the surviving members of the the sheriff. The book does not tell the positives they did for this boy.

Worth Reading

Very good history; not only of the subject of children committing capital crimes, but of the times that they lived in. Pre- welfare, child assistance, unemployment insurance and social security. For people who think these things are wasteful, this book will reveal life without them. It was only due to several good people that this boy's life was saved. And there were many others who did not have mentors and who languished. It also brings to life the story of Father Flanagan and Boys Town, something that was widely known in my childhood. It is well written and comprehensive. A true life story that reads like a novel.

About the Author
Brian Douglas Tennyson has taught at Cape Breton University in Nova Scotia for many years and is now professor emeritus in its Department of History. He has published 14 books and more than 30 articles in scholarly journals. His book (with Roger Sarty), Guardian of the Gulf: Sydney, Cape Breton, and the Atlantic Wars (2000) won the Keith Matthews Award, given by the Canadian Nautical Research Society, as best book of the year on nautical history.

One aspect that I felt may be particularly useful was the self-assessment checklist, which teachers can use to explore why certain difficult behaviours are taking place, and to determine whether some basic elements of good behaviour management are present before further steps are takes. This book would be useful for primary school teachers, particularly those who are newly qualified. It would be useful for Educational Psychologists supporting such members of staff, as a resource to refer to. -- Debate It is always refreshing to read books by motivated and pro-active education staff who are prepared to think outside the box in order to help all children achieve their potential in school and this is one such book. There are a lot of easy to implement strategies and tips for teachers to use in this book making it one which should be in every school. I like the "Five Minute Golden Rule" idea in the first chapter and this tip alone could go a long way to restoring good self esteem in a child. I think if I were a teacher I would be excited about teaching with some of these ideas to promote positive behaviour within the whole class. The ideas in this book are inspirational and refreshing and there seems to be no reason why every teacher shouldn't be implementing some of them on a daily basis. About the Author
Nicola S Morgan has taught for fifteen years in a variety of settings, including mainstream and special needs schools. During this time she developed a reputation for managing the most difficult classes and pupils. Consequently, she was asked to begin organising training courses for staff on managing children within the classroom environment. This interest developed to the point where she became a full-time trainer and consultant on primary school behaviour management. She is currently managing a number of projects on positive behaviour management at a selection of difficult schools based on intervention schemes which she has developed herself. She is the author of Quick, Easy and Effective Behaviour Management Ideas for the Classroom, also published by Jessica Kingsley Publishers. Gill Ellis is currently a headteacher of a large primary school in South Wales and believes that if we can create the right environment for children to learn then they will be challenged, engaged and excited about learning. She has developed a keen interest in creating a positive learning culture through a whole school approach and has represented local authorities through raising achievement groups, pilots and projects on behaviour management and worked with parents and family groups in creating positive partnerships with schools.

Excellent outline of directions for the church

The Abbott presents a summary of a number of issues that have been in the forefront of theological discussion for years and aptly points out that no progress from the hierarchy has been made. He notes there is not necessarily a right or wrong answer but that all questions should be openly addressed and not ignored. He urges dialog just a Jesus encouraged dialog and discussion amongst dissenting groups. A very good and easy read. Good food for thought.

Adorable, friendly vegetables take readers on a chapter-by-chapter guide through each ingredient in the garden: tomatoes, onions, basil, peppers, and garlic. Supplies for growing each one are laid out, and step-by-step instructions follow, with a few hilarious veggie jokes interspersed throughout. The introduction provides a "rough guide" for when to sow and harvest, but makes the wise recommendation to check the local weather. Some terms are defined while others, like "worm tea" and "wormery" are not. The pasta-sauce recipe is a little vague at times, using "about ten big handfuls" and "a bunch" as measurements. Each step is illustrated with photos and includes instructions for kids to cut onions and garlic, but recommend asking an adult to help cut the pepper. About the Author
Cassie Liversidge is a fine artist and mom of two young boys as well as an avid gardener and cook. She has been developing an "Edible Playground" at her son's school in East London, and the idea for this book grew out of that. Cassie was lucky to be raised in the country, where her parents owned a plant nursery, so growing is something she once took for granted and now loves to share with adults and children alike. The rhyming text alternates between what individual students are doing and a summary statement that is the same as the books title. Each of the 26 animal students has a name that starts with the same letter so that the book doubles as an alphabet book. Adam is an alligator, Ians an iguana, Zacharys a zebra, etc. As with other titles in the series, this is a bright and lively book. While there are a few tears shared on this last day, the focus is on the cooperative good cheer of this tightly knit class. Walsch, who has written nine previous books about his conversations with God, here distills the essential elements of this new testament and offers specific ways readers can practice these core messages. The messages range from There is no such thing as Right and Wrong, there is only What Works and What Does Not Work, given what you are trying to do to We are all One. A lot of this is a mash-up of New Age philosophies, with a heaping portion of A Course in Miracles. But the approach here portions out the information in neat segments. Each of the 25 core messages is explained, followed by a list of meditations and activities (and lots of journaling) to apply it to everyday life. Even those drawn to the Conversation with God philosophy (and Walsch’s books are international best-sellers) may balk at some of the suggestions, such as Don’t do things you don’t want to do, even at work. But fans will like having all this information in digestible bites. --Ilene Cooper

About the Author
Neale Donald Walsch is the author of the Conversations with God series of books, seven of which have made the New York Times bestseller lists. He has created a number of global projects revolving around the core messages found here, including an education program for children and a collaboration with people across the planet to invite serious and ongoing discussion of these ideas everywhere. Neale lives in southern Oregon with his wife, the American Poet Em Claire. The two travel and work together extensively, sharing with people around the world information they hope may help others in finding a deeper connection with themselves, their soul, and God.

The CwG Cosmology viewed with Bifocals

This latest piece by Mr. Walsch is an extremely nurturing, rewarding, and penetrating recapitulation of memoranda proffered in his previous works. "What God Said" delves deeper into the 25 core messages of the CwG series (as well as the post CwG material) and does a commendable job at revealing how these messages can positively impact the micro, as well as the macro, contextualizations of our world. Neale's work is voluminous and may be overwhelming for a newbie to dissect, absorb, retain and implement all the sagacity that the works contain, thus this latest book may serve as a wonderful entry point into the beauty that the dialogues harbor. Should this book inspire said newbie, one can always go back and read the previous catalogue of work. Neal's writing is flowing, descriptive and candid as usual, but he's taken on a slightly more didactic tone which I certainly appreciate.

My only misgiving about the piece is Neale's recommendation to journal thoughts, feelings and insights vis-à-vis the core messages. I counted 10 or 12 notebooks I would need to accomplish the tasks, and I know I would need more because I was only half way through the book when I stopped counting; a daunting but probably worthwhile mission if one were so inclined.

5 stars on the board with a real 4 and ½ from this reader. Well done.

PS I had the pleasure of attending one of Neal's lectures in Lillydale, NY this summer, even got my picture taken with him. Truly he is a lovely soul, make the effort to see him.

Interesting Concepts

This is the first book I had read by Neale D. Walsch so I am not a 'follower' nor had I even heard of him prior to picking up this book. However, many of the concepts had been already part of my belief system. The nuances, deeper considerations, and applications in life were at times very new. "I never thought of it in that way." was often said by me while reading. Overall, the book was well written, both in flow and in the attempt to aid the reader to feel comfortable with the topics that could seem quite new and esoteric. Walsch does a good job at portraying the theology discussed fairly and clearly. The 'Applying the Message to Everyday Life' sections, at the end of each chapter, demonstrate simple yet powerful ways to apply these new and sometimes difficult concepts are insightful and give clear direction to testing and working through the ideas in real tangible ways for anyone willing.

If there was any drawback, it would have been the consistent reference to Jesus and the NT scriptures and none other. He does make reference to other faiths within the text, but only the deities' names or the books they consider holy, not its content or structure. Considering Walsch was born and raised Roman Catholic that was no real surprised, but it did become monotonous when few if any of the ideologies presented in the book accepted by Christians. However, when talking to a Christian you use the scriptures they understand and he, Walsch and God, does that well.

To finalize, this will not be my last Walsch book. How to choose is the question.

It's FINALLY Here! The Book We've Been Waiting For!

Give this book out!

As an HUGE fan of Neale Donald Walsch and his books, I am often trying to explain all of the wonderful ideas and life-changing concepts to other people, but can't. I hope they'll read the first book, and then get hooked as I was, but I also know that it's a long haul to get to all of thee great material.

Now I can recommend this book directly, and KNOW they can be hooked!

The book starts with the 25 ideas in the description, and then goes on to deepen the readers understanding of each. I haven't finished the book yet, but I am thrilled to be reading it, and will be recommending it already!
