Reinventing Electric Utilities provides an excellent summation of the evolution of the electric utility industry and an easy to understand overview of energy deregulation. The authors explain the legal and technical aspects of deregulation in a format both understandable to the novice and with technical savvy fitting any professional. This book helps anyone understand the effects of deregulation on the future of energy and how all of us can promote clean power generation and transportation.

Farkas' review is premature and off-center. SMUD is recognized today for its efficiency, creativity, and long-term thinking and action. Closing Rancho Seco (SE of Sacramento CA) nuclear power plant was years ahead of its time. The closing has proven to be very cost effective and well ahead of the game. Rather than being "too cheap to meter", using nuclear power (fission) to produce electricity is like using a chainsaw to cut butter. It is overkill and makes a mess.

Smeloff is an avowed leftist from the SMUD board of directors. His main claim to fame is closing the commercial nuclear reactor pictured on his book cover. What nerve. After that he shepards in Freeman to run SMUD -- what a disaster. Ask ex-Governor Davis. California suffers from a lack of generation and Smeloff helped remove over 800MWe from the California grid in 1989. I would not spend five cents on this book.

Succinct Explanation of Anglo-Catholic Liturgy

I found the story of the Mask in the introduction to be an important concept for all Christians to understand. I used it in an Adult Formation class in my parish.

The explanations of the Sacred Space, the Ritual, and Bodily Motions answers many questions that newcomers to the Episcopal Church may be hesitant to ask.

I highly recommend this short but important book.

Howard's original The Liturgy Explained seems more succinct and less verbose. I liked Howard's imagery of ritual because it seemed to have a more familiar tone. This book is okay but I will continue to use the older version with my newcomer classes. they can still be found though they are out of print.

The subtitle for the first of the Road To Science Fiction is 'From Gilgamesh to Wells'. Ancient mythological legends are only talked about in introduction, though.

This is not a volume of short stories in general, as the time period the editor is tracing the changes in human thought and method over didn't have such things. In fact, he points out that 'The Diamond Lens' may be the first SF story 'as such'.

So, here it does make sense to use excerpts where there is no other choice, fro, Verne, Shelley, Swift, etc.

Apart from that, the best three stories are right at the end, so people just interested in that part of it should start there, and browse the rest, which will be of little interest to many. Browsing the intro pieces to the work is worth a look, even if you don't want to read ancient Greek silliness, for example.

Beware--this reprinting of The Road to Science Fiction: From Gilgamesh to Wells does not include everything from the first edition, released in 1977. Missing is an extremely useful appendix containing a reading list of essential science fiction stories and novels up through the mid-1970s. My mass-marked paperback of the first edition had become badly worn so I ordered the new edition as a replacement. But because it lacks the reading-list appendix I am returning it immediately.

Together, these theses provide the framework for a radical rethinking of the authority of psychoanalytic knowledge and practice and of the nature of psychoanalytic claims to objectivity. Psychoanalytic interpretations are best understood as existentially interrogative – they test who and how one might be – and if successful, to some extent identity formative. The validity conditions of psychoanalytic knowledge thus concern the creation/discovery of satisfactory forms of practice-orienting self-narration rather than those regularly operative in the natural sciences. However, an adequate assessment of psychoanalytic claims requires that the claims of science are given due consideration and the impediments to practice-orienting self-narration under conditions of late modernity are acknowledged.
