About the Author
Kate Collins-Donnelly has worked as a therapist, psychologist, criminologist and anger management consultant based in the UK for many years. She presently runs a successful independent consultancy practice which provides cognitive behavioural therapy, counselling, coaching and training, and is head of the Psychological and Criminological Research Division. She is the author of Starving the Anger Gremlin, Starving the Anxiety Gremlin and Starving the Stress Gremlin.

Great book!

I am a school social worker who works with Emotionally Disturbed students from K-12. This is a really great book for some of those kids. The key is finding the kids that really recognize that they are feeling stressed and want help. It's not fun or terribly entertaining so it can only be used for those kids really wanting help, otherwise the kiddos are bored. That being said, the kids that want the help really enjoy this. I recently used it with a very bright 4th grader (he is advanced academically) and he never wanted to go back to class because he was learning to much from the book. It has some language that students have a hard time with (may have been written by someone in England? Some strange words or spellings that most kids aren't used to). I would recommend for High School Students and some Junior High Students. I do not recommend for those with learning disabilities. It has some worksheets, but we usually just discuss those answers together. I was recommended the Gremlin books by a coworker who uses the Anger Gremlin within her Jr. High and HS behavior classrooms. She has great success them in that setting. Overall, I would suggest anyone use in a therapeutic setting. Might be too tedious for a kid to do on their own unless they are VERY self-aware and desperately want help.

The myth of « ethical » warfare

The purpose of this book, written by a US colonel and intelligence officer, is to show that Ancient Greek warfare did not privilege and was not reduced to hoplite phalanx battle. It is also to show that, more generally, there is no such thing as a “Western way of war” going back to the Ancient Greeks where victory over the enemy is achieved through a so-called “decisive battle”. In fact, as the author shows rather well, Greek warfare relied both on face-to-face combat and battles and surprise attacks, whether ambushes or raids, by day or by night.

Rose Mary Sheldon provides numerous examples to support her views and she builds a rather convincing. Above all, the main impression that this book delivers is that, instead of two opposed models, each side was essentially pragmatic and would use whatever could work. To the winner, there was certainly nothing inherently dishonourable in winning by stealth, surprise or deceit, although the losing might tend to disagree, if only to make excuses that would explain away its failures.

Another interesting point is to show that, while stealth and surprise attacks are possibly as old as warfare itself, their usage may in fact have increased as Greek warfare became more sophisticated during and especially after the Peloponnesian war. As well shown by the author, this is very likely to be linked to the growing professionalization of Greek warfare during the Fourth Century BC in general, the increasing reliance on mercenary forces with the appropriate discipline and training, and the development of swifter light infantry- the peltast type - in particular.

A related point is about the psychology of warfare and its practicalities, or what another author called “the face of battle” once upon a time. This is to show to what extent and why it may be more difficult to plan and execute a successful surprise attack, whether a raid or an ambush, than it is to face an enemy in pitched battle on an open plain and surrounded by fellow citizens.

A further point is the prejudice against ranged weapons (archery, in particular, whether horse archers or massed foot archers) whose use was considered “cowardly” because it meant killing from a distance without putting its own life in danger. Interestingly, traces of such a prejudice, which could be social and/or racial, can be found in Ancient Greek authors, in Roman ones, but also in much later authors, for instance some of the sources for the Hundred Years’ War between the Kingdoms of France and England. Interestingly also, and once again, the ones complaining that “this wasn’t cricket” – whether hoplites, legionaries or plate armoured men-at-arms – were essentially “blaming” the enemy for not fighting according to their (advantageous) rules and for choosing to fight in ways that gave them a better chance to win.

As already noted by another reviewer, the bibliography and the abundant notes are good. They provide ample material for whoever may want to further explore some of the aspects that are touched upon and discussed in this book. I did have a slight problem with the author’s style, although perhaps this was more of an editing issue. The book can be quite repetitive, with the same points and examples being made multiple times, and then summarised again and again. Apart from being somewhat tedious and distracting, these repetitions can also tend to weaken the case that the author seeks to make. At times, I got the – very subjective - impression that the author was belabouring points as if repetitions could make them somewhat more convincing. Four strong stars for a book that is well worth reading and mostly convincing in dispelling a number of "western" stereotypes.

Greek warfare was more than Phalanx clashes

Ambush was present throughout all history of Greek warfare. That is the point that the highly intelligent and great scholar Rose Mary Sheldon wants to prove. And she nails it, that’s for sure. Travelling through time since the Iliad until the Hellenistic period, the authoress manages to dig an overwhelming amount of literary evidence regarding the uses of ambushes, trickery, night raids, intelligence gathering, secret operations and betrayals with 5th columns.

If this was the first time this issue was brought to notice, Colonel Sheldon would receive accolades and cheers. Unfortunately this issue was already debated, although there are still many historians which simply dismiss this kind of operations in classical Greek warfare concentrating on the clash of phalanxes. For that reason I believe that this book is still needed.

This work has many excellent merits, the amount of research was immense and well done, the sheer amount of examples that Sheldon produces for each situation will dissipate most doubts regarding the fact that ancient Greek generals were efficient, trying to use their resources in the most effective way…and they wouldn’t miss the opportunity for a good ambush. She also proves that those kind of operations were frequent (not rarities) and that military leaders needed to be careful with reconnaissance and be imaginative (the most telling example was a simulation of an ambush using the fastest men so that the main army could retreat safely; that delayed the pursuing army and the “ambushers” returned to their army after the successful operation).

Another subject studied by the authoress was the way Greeks saw victory by trickery vs victory by strength. The Odysseus vs Achilles way of battle. Colonel Rose Sheldon reminds that Odysseus wasn’t only an ambusher, he was also a mighty spear fighter. She makes a case on oriental prejudice and that the use of ranged weapons was considered cowardly due mainly to social factors. That our own prejudices against ambushes and trickery are misplaced and easterners weren’t more prone to the use of those tactics then Greeks.

That is obviously a complex issue, because contrary to the authoress supposition, our present culture doesn’t descend solely from the Greek. Celtic and Germanic societies also had that same “prejudice” against ranged weapons (although obviously they also used them extensively). The single fight and the beheading of the foe was the most momentous event of the champion. And it’s almost impossible to prove that this trend was imported or exported by Greeks. The Italians (not only Romans), even before Magna Grecia had a spear fighter and duel mentality also. So probably the question of the highest valor being considered on face to face battle isn’t just a modern prejudice but a very ancient cultural and geographical issue. That doesn’t mean that all those cultures would miss a fine opportunity to unleash an ambush and defeat their foes that way…but nothing was greater for a Celtic warrior than a duel in front of his army, for example.

So, the authoress opposes “The Western Way of War” by Hanson, and occasionally “Soldiers and Ghosts” by Lendon. Both those books and the presently reviewed are excellent and remarkable works of investigation and analyses and I would advise any reader to consult them all.

There is also interesting information regarding the evolution of light troops, including the rise of the peltast, the Iphikratean Reforms, the ascension of the professional specialist and mercenary soldier, etc.

As spots to be improved in next editions I would recommend more useful maps with movement troops and places of the operations; when possible even probable troop positions. The correction of some small mistakes and introducing some of the examples in the correct place (just as an example, the attack of Heridippas against the Mysians of Pharnabazus should obviously been included in the section “The Fourth Century” since the attack took place in 395 BC (which by the way, that section should be a chapter in itself and not a sub-section within the chapter “Chapter 5 - Surprise Attacks – Fifth Century”).

The bibliography is a treasure in itself; and the immense notes are useful indeed for further investigation. All in all a very interesting book which raises questions old but always contemporary.

A delight to read.

I enjoyed reading this book so much. It is a fascinating account of Emilie Demant Hatt's experiences living with the Sami people in the early 20th century. Barbara Sjoholm, the translator of Hatt's work from the original Danish, also did an excellent job editing, which I learned about at one of the talks she gave on the book. Important Cultural Insights

This is an amazing book giving insight into the lives of Sami women at the beginning of the 1900's. Barbara Sjoholm did a wonderful job researching and writing Emilie Demant Hatt's life and times amongst the Sami. Brava!

Daily life among the reindeer people

I have been so captivated by this book that I’ve made myself read it slowly, so I miss no details of daily life among the reindeer-herding Sami more than 100 years ago. Recently translated into English by Barbara Sjoholm, this historic book is as fascinating today as it was in 1913, when Emilie Demant Hatt gave the world a focused, open-minded view into the Sami world.
For example, I became absorbed with how a baby is bathed in a frigid tent: “If it’s extremely cold, the cradle is kept warm with a hot stone while the child is bathed. When the child is washed and dried off, he’s dressed in a small soft fur of newborn reindeer skin with the fur side toward the body…under the head the child has a small down pillow with an embroidered case and over that a slip of white rabbit skin, so the head can lie soft and warm.”
This book gets five stars because it deserves ten for authenticity alone. Any student of Scandinavian history will want to read it, probably more than once. Thanks so much to Barbara Sjoholm for translating it, and to the University of Wisconsin Press for publishing it.

Couldn't Put It Down!

I liked Bonomo's first book a lot - Abby Up the Hill - but I couldn't put this one down. The author has a voice and a passion. She uses them to speak for all of us. She has put a human face on the universal pursuit of peace, serenity and the life well-lived, and she has drawn us a road map on how to achieve these things. Everyone can understand the directions and tap into it at some level.
She is a gifted writer, and she is very, very funny.

Bonomo really is a very fine writer, and her idiosyncratic explorations of spiritual life make for very entertaining reading.
This book is so accessible, and its author so genuine, that I wouldn't have any problem in recommending this boo to even the most hardened cynic.
It will appeal to people who like Ann Lamott and Kathleen Norris.
A fun and fascinating read.

A middle aged woman who wears khaki pants and lace shawls and is pursued by two available men. And she goes around with a crochet hook and yarn in her bag. That part could be me. I've read all of the Molly Pink books so this one was like coming home. I love Tarzana, California, at least the way the books describe it. The bookstore with the crazy Hookers and Adele are all a hoot. This book is all about a murder at a wedding reception where there are enough suspects to make poor Barry, The detective "friend" of Molly, wonder if he'll ever find the guilty party. Molly is helping or hindering the investigation but in this book she has other issues too. She's trying to keep her two guys as friends and, of course, this makes them more competitive than ever. It's a good read with lots of back and forth. Molly Pink is wonderful and Betty Hechtman writes as though she knows these characters. If you like light feel good books, you'll love this one.

Betty Hechtman, author of the Crochet mysteries, including If Hooks Could Kill, Behind the Seams, and You Better Knot Die, is also the author of the Yarn Retreat Mystery series, including Silence of the Lamb’s Wool and Yarn to Go. In The Pink is Good.

Fascinating and fun!

For Better or Worsted is Betty Hechtman’s eighth novel in the fascinating and fun Crochet Mystery series. If you have not yet read earlier books in this series, you can easily pick up this one and not feel out of place – the author stitches just enough details in the design to invite new readers to feel like long-term members of the Tarzana Hookers (uh, that’s ‘hookers’ as in crochet enthusiasts).

I would love to be a fly on the wall when an author plots a new tale – after all, how often does one plot the murder of a bridegroom at his own wedding reception? And how many mothers of the bride would want to be photographed while plopped into the wedding cake … holding the bloody murder weapon? That’s a little over-the-top, no matter how Mom feels about her new son-in-law, even if Mom is a reality TV star. But could Mom have done the evil deed?

Molly Pink is the Events Coordinator for Shedd & Royal Books and More where she and her friends in the Tarzana Hookers group meet to socialize and work on their projects together. Thursday, the bride (and widow) is a new member of the group. Thursday’s father, Mason, is an attorney and one of two men who want Molly’s undivided attention. Molly was headed into the reception and ran into her other want-to-be suitor, Barry, when the murder was found.

After the initial police inquiry was completed, Molly snuck Thursday away to her home where she could avoid the paparazzi for the evening. Barry, however, is the detective in charge of Thursday’s husband’s murder investigation. Molly now has to see both Mason and Barry daily. SO not in her plan! Mason and Barry do not like each other, but they do agree on one thing. They do not want Molly involved in the murder investigation, but how could she and her fellow Hookers not try to find the bad guy – or gal? After all, Thursday is now one of their own! And Molly had already successfully solved other murders!

The eccentric ladies of the crochet group take on a new project, one that will bring new customers into the bookstore and multiple challenges for Molly. This reader enjoyed seeing the Hookers in their unique personalities and talents as they work through this new project. (One of the results is one of three crochet patterns in the book; all three patterns appear fun and easy to do). But one of the Hookers is suspected of “yarn bombing” Tarzana with bright, fun crocheted items – could one of the group actually be sent to jail for this?

Each central and peripheral character is uniquely well-developed. None of the regulars will fade into the woodwork, as each has at least one highly-memorable trait. I like Molly and her best friend Dinah best, maybe in part as Molly is more of a contemporary to me, but the group definitely couldn’t get along without Adele and Elise!

The cover art is appealing, both the colors and design. From the crochet hooks, pup, and various crafts to the bright window, it is a fun. open invitation to throw open the panes and go for the story within that will not disappoint.

The plot is very thoroughly and finely executed. No clue has gone unchecked, and there are no unresolved concerns at the end. It is perfectly stitched to the gauge that brings the suspense to new heights for the Hookers! There are plot twists and even u-turns that made me doubt every suspect I considered! And the solution is far from what one would expect, based on the initial clues.

I absolutely recommend For Better or Worsted to adults of all ages who enjoy well-written cozy mysteries with women sleuths, needle crafts, and challenging crimes solved that include a bit of romance and a lot of fun. If you haven’t yet read one of Betty’s books, you are in for an exciting, suspenseful, and delightful ride!

mystery and crochet

As with all her books, there is a nice combination of mystery and crocheting. When I read these books, I am always eager to get out my yarn and hook and work on one of my projects. There are project directions in the back of the book which are for the projects the book's characters are working on.

Por ser esposa de un rojo, por tener un vecino envidioso, por haber ganado un conflicto de tierras, por haberse quedado con la chica que deseaba otro. Nadie persiguió o castigó a los verdugos. Nadie los llamó verdugos. Durante los siguientes cuarenta años fueron simplemente los vencedores.

La periodista de El País Natalia Junquera, especialista en memoria histórica y robo de niños, ha dedicado más de seis años de investigación, de entrevistas, de viajes y de conversaciones con los hombres y las mujeres que sufrieron los crímenes de la Guerra Civil y del franquismo, una realidad silenciada que todavía hoy produce escalofríos.
