Lighting the Shakespearean Stage, 1567 - 1642, by Robert B. Graves

In Lighting the Shakespearean Stage, 1567–1642,R. B. Graves examines the lighting of early modern English drama from both historical and aesthetic perspectives. He traces the contrasting traditions of sunlit amphitheaters and candlelit hall playhouses, describes the different lighting techniques, and estimates the effect of these techniques both indoors and outdoors.

Graves discusses the importance of stage lighting in determining the dramatic effect, even in cases where the manipulation of light was not under the direct control of the theater artists. He devotes a chapter to the early modern lighting equipment available to English Renaissance actors and surveys theatrical lighting before the construction of permanent playhouses in London. Elizabethan stage lighting, he argues, drew on both classical and medieval precedents.

Review

“This is scholarship of an impressively high order. Graves seems to have exhausted all available original historical data and fruitful modern speculation on this subject; and his arguments from these sources are very persuasive. Equally persuasive are his original and ingenious measurements of theatrical venues by date/time/light-angle/distance which, strangely, no one else has thought to try.”—Philip H. Highfill Jr., author (with Kalman A. Burnim) of John Bell, Patron of British Theatrical Portraiture: A Catalog of the Theatrical Portraits in His Editions of Bell’s Shakespeare and Bell’s British Theatre

From the Inside Flap
R. B. Graves examines the lighting of early modern English drama from both historical and aesthetic perspectives. He traces the contrasting traditions of sunlit amphitheaters and candlelit hall playhouses, describes the different lighting techniques, and estimates the effect of these techniques both indoors and outdoors.

Supporting recent scholarship, Graves demonstrates that the conventions of indoor and outdoor illumination are remarkably similar. In addition to providing new evidence, Graves makes use of experiments conducted at the "new" Globe in Southwark, London, and in various Tudor halls.

Analyzing the effect of the weather on theater lighting, Graves traces the history of performance times in the open-air Elizabethan, Jacobean, and Caroline theaters. He reconstructs the lighting of the amphitheaters by considering the size and shape of the playhouses, the orientation of the stages within the open-air yards, and the presence of roofs shading the stage.

Examining the natural lighting of indoor private playhouses, Graves takes note of performance times and the size and placement of windows to evaluate the amount of daylight available in various hall playhouses. He contrasts the natural light with the artificiallight produced for the court masques. Few of the special effects common in court performances, however, were used in the production of plays.

Considering the placement and manipulation of lighting instruments, Graves reconstructs the artificial lighting at the professional indoor hall playhouses. He discusses the artificial light at the Salisbury Court and Cockpit-in-Court playhouses and maintains that even though one might expect otherwise, the use of hand-held property light was essentially the same indoors as outdoors.

Graves concludes by focusing on the overall visual effect in a scene from Webster's Duchess of Malfi.

Churchill and the King: The Wartime Alliance of Winston Churchill and George VI, by Kenneth Weisbrode

For fans of The King's Speech, the intriguing bond between monarch and prime minister and its crucial role during World War II

The political and personal relationship between King George VI and Winston Churchill during World War II is one that has been largely overlooked throughout history, yet the trust and loyalty these men shared helped Britain navigate its perhaps most trying time.

Despite their vast differences, the two men met weekly and found that their divergent virtues made them a powerful duo. The king’s shy nature was offset by Churchill’s willingness to cast himself as the nation’s savior. Meanwhile, Churchill’s complicated political past was given credibility by the king’s embrace and counsel. Together as foils, confidants, conspirators, and comrades, the duo guided Britain through war while reinspiring hope in the monarchy, Parliament, and the nation itself.

Books about these men as individuals could fill a library, but Kenneth Weisbrode’s study of the unique bond between them is the first of its kind.

From Publishers Weekly
Historian Weisbrode (On Ambivalence: The Problems and Pleasures of Having It Both Ways) shares the story of how two of the most important figures in 20th-century Britain, Churchill and King George VI, worked tirelessly to maintain British interests throughout WWII. Though told with humor, Weisbrode presents lackluster evidence to support his notion that the king's role during the war was on the level of Churchill's. Throughout, readers will get to know Churchill's eccentric personality, his successes and failures, but relatively little of the king's. Indeed, there are similarities between the two men's natures and opinions, but the story proves to reveal parallel, if complementary, lives instead of comparable powers. Only at the end of the book does Weisbrode make good on his belief in the pair's significant partnership: after reconstructing the history of the two men in tandem it becomes very difficult to imagine Churchill succeeding in that without the full support of the king. Furthermore, many anecdotes feel unfinished, or contain British-isms Americans are unlikely to understand. The friendship that grew between these two historical figures makes for an uplifting story, but not an entire book. (Nov.)

From Booklist
When we think of Britain’s resistance to German bombing in WWII, the bulldog face of Winston Churchill comes to mind. As prime minister, he not only led the country in its darkest hour but also, greater than that, provided inspiration for the beleaguered populace to hunker down and persevere. But as this author establishes, that was only part of the picture. The full truth is that Churchill had a partner in guiding the country through those difficult times, King George VI, the shy prince who reluctantly inherited the throne from his colorful older brother, Edward VIII, when the latter abdicated in 1936 for “reasons of the heart.” Age and background differences between the two men melted away as prime minister and king built a relationship of trust and respect as the war went on and on. Why this alliance worked so well—for the two men personally and, in a larger context, for the benefit of Britain—is analyzed in terms of the two men’s personality traits and qualities that challenged and stimulated both of them to be, and do, their finest. --Brad Hooper

Review
“Churchill and the King is a slim volume . . . yet it merits a place on Churchillians’ bookshelves . . . Weisbrode chooses to sketch . . . a credible account of the relationship between these two men who led Britain in World War II.”
—Paul Reid, The American Spectator

“Wonderfully readable . . . This is popular history at its best . . . Weisbrode does a very good job of illuminating the bonds that drew two men with such different personalities together.”
—The Daily Beast

“An organic comparison of two highly flawed and deeply sympathetic characters at the helm of England at her most perilous hour. . . .Weisbrode makes a very compelling case that each man was ‘working against his own faults, on behalf of the other.’ An inspired, engaging comparative portrait.”
—Kirkus

“Historian Weisbrode shares the story of how two of the most important figures in 20th-century Britain, Churchill and King George VI, worked tirelessly to maintain British interests throughout WWII. . .  The friendship that grew between these two historical figures makes for an uplifting story.”
—Publishers Weekly

“Churchill and the King is a thoughtful, deeply insightful account of two unconventional friends -- the shy, stammering George VI and the flamboyant Winston Churchill -- who, after triumphing over their own personal adversities, join forces to rally their countrymen and inspire the world in the dark days of World War II. "
—Lynne Olson ,  author of Citizens of London, Troublesome Young Men, and  Those Angry Days

“Weisbrode’s excellent book on Churchill’s relationship with King George VI is very well done and will take an honoured place on my Churchill shelf.”
—Paul Johnson, author of Modern Times and Churchill

“One of the last unexplored relationships of World War Two is that between Winston Churchill and the only person who could have sacked him during that conflict, King George VI. They had very different personalities and views on politics, but their country needed them to work in perfect tandem. As Kenneth Weisbrode writes, ‘Somehow they made it work,’ and in this well-researched and well-written book, he shows how what began as a professional necessity turned into a genuine friendship, and eventually one of the best working relationships of either man’s life.”
—Andrew Roberts, author of The Storm of War and Masters and Commanders

“The shy, stammering King and the loquacious, domineering Prime Minister were an odd couple--but they gave each other courage and confidence when England stood alone. Ken Weisbrode has written an elegant and perceptive study of friendship in power.”
—Evan Thomas, author of Ike's Bluff and Sea of Thunder

Parallel Psychologies
By John D. Cofield
This short little book of about 200 pages contains a good deal of fascinating information about and insight into the relationship between King George VI of Great Britain and Prime Minister Winston Churchill. The two men were "accidental" leaders who led their nation through some of its darkest hours to eventual victory. The name Churchill brings to most people's minds his well known and powerful oratory, while George VI, thanks to the recent movie The King's Speech, is now remembered for his long and painful struggles with stammering. There is much more to their story, and Kenneth Weisbrode has done an excellent job of detailing it.

King George VI began life as a second son, royal but without much importance to the monarchy. He was overshadowed by his more glamorous older brother and seemed destined for obscurity until, in December 1936, his brother's abdication made him King. As monarch he displayed hitherto unsuspected qualities of resilience and strength of mind. Winston Churchill's youth saw him develop into a promising, if extremely bumptious, journalist, soldier, and politician. In his thirties and early forties he held practically every Cabinet post until his responsibility for the Gallipoli invasion disaster in 1915 derailed him. His fortunes revived in the 1920s, but he then found himself "in the wilderness" for a decade until, reluctantly and with a great deal of mistrust, the King appointed him Prime Minister in 1940. For the next five years Churchill and the King met almost weekly to discuss the course of the war. It was interesting to read their letters and records of some of their discussions. The King sometimes disagreed with the Prime Minister and urged different courses on him, and while there is no evidence that Churchill ever changed his mind as a result of those disagreements, it's probable that they did cause him to think his ideas through again.

I enjoyed this book very much. Churchill's always colorful character is vividly depicted in several amusing anecdotes, while the King's quieter personality is also well portrayed,as are those of Franklin Roosevelt, Stalin, and others with whom they dealt during the war. Weisbrode's psychological analyses and insights are reasoned and illuminating. The book can serve equally well as an example of comparative biography or as a textbook on the relationship between a constitutional monarch and his government. Above all, it bears witness to the ability of people to rise above low expectations and perform admirably in the face of enormous difficulties.

Creating a Bond, Leading a Nation: The King and His Prime Minister!
By Mike O'Connor
Kenneth Weisbrode's CHURCHILL AND THE KING, THE WARTIME ALLIANCE BETWEEN WINSTON CHURCHILL AND GEORGE VI recounts the working and personal relationship between King George VI and his Prime Minister, Winston Churchill during World War II. It is a fascinating tale of two seemingly different individuals coming together, each evolving and, in turn, enabling the other to grow in strength and effectiveness.

At first appearance, George VI and Churchill did, indeed, appear to be widely different individuals, Churchill the golden-throated, pugnacious firebrand; the King, a shy, stammering royal who had gained the crown because of his brother's abdication. Yet, they actually shared many common characteristics. Each had strengths and weaknesses. As their relationship began through weekly luncheon meetings, the strengths came into play, helping each man grow as leaders and individuals. In time, genuine friendship developed, which, in turn, helped their working relationship flower. Though Churchill has been lionized over the years for his wartime leadership, Weisbrode's insightful book highlights the valuable role George VI played in enabling Churchill's growth as a leader.

Weisbrode's book is a fascinating, compelling exploration of one of the most important friendships in 20th Century English history. It sheds new light and insights on the roles played by George VI and Winston Churchill in World War II. Recommended.

Disappointing
By Chris Sterling
It is difficult to write about two men when the most important aspect of their relationship--face-to-face conversations--took place with nobody else present to record what was said and how. The author is thus forced back to printed or documentary resources which cannot shed much light on the personality of each man. Instead, he moves off on tangents of potted biography in both cases, whenn such information is readily available elsewhere in better form. So I came away from reading this with little more sense of George VI in the 1939-45 period (Churchill's story I know well)--and that is sad as the relationship WAS, indeed, an important one. The king's backing was vital to Churchill's wartime leadership . . .but we get too little of "why" in this tale.

The Family: A Journey into the Heart of the Twentieth Century, by David Laskin

The author of the The Children’s Blizzard delivers an epic work of twentieth century history through the riveting story of one extraordinary Jewish family

In tracing the roots of this family—his own family—Laskin captures the epic sweep of the twentieth century. A modern-day scribe, Laskin honors the traditions, the lives, and the choices of his ancestors: revolutionaries and entrepreneurs, scholars and farmers, tycoons and truck drivers. The Family is a deeply personal, dramatic, and emotional account of people caught in a cataclysmic time in world history.

A century and a half ago, a Torah scribe and his wife raised six children in a yeshivatown at the western fringe of the Russian empire. Bound by their customs and ancient faith, the pious couple expected their sons and daughter to carry family traditions into future generations. But the social and political crises of our time decreed otherwise.

The torrent of history took the scribe’s family down three very different roads. One branch immigrated to America and founded the fabulously successful Maidenform Bra Company; another went to Palestine as pioneers and participated in the contentious birth of the state of Israel; the third branch remained in Europe and suffered the onslaught of the Nazi occupation.

With cinematic power and beauty, bestselling author David Laskin brings to life the upheavals of the twentieth century through the story of one family, three continents, two world wars, and the rise and fall of nations.

Amazon.com Review
An Amazon Best Book of the Month, October 2013: Every writer, established or aspiring, has at one time or another looked around and decided, “My life would make a great book.” Some of them are sadly mistaken. But journalist David Laskin’s life--or rather that of his forbears, three generations of a Russian Jewish family originally named HaKoen--has made a fantastic book. Despite its name, The Family is not about the Mafia, or the Mansons, but really about one particular, ordinary/extraordinary twentieth century shtetl clan. But you don’t have to be Jewish to be fascinated by the six children of a Torah scribe on the western fringe of the Russian empire; they, like people everywhere, were buffeted by political and social and economic upheavals of their times. One branch of the family ended up in America as the prosperous founders of Maidenform lingerie; another repatriated to Israel; the third suffered the Holocaust. While I tended to favor the stories about the American branch (how can you not love a 4’ 11” Russian revolutionary, who, with her husband Wolf, invented the brassiere in 1924 and got filthy rich in ladies underwear in the depression?), the other HaKoens-turned-Cohens provided plenty of educational entertainment as well. You think you know about the Russian revolution? Try seeing it through Laskin’s ancestors’ eyes. Likewise, WWII and Zionism. This is a great, big-hearted book about how time and place modifies family, whatever or wherever its roots. --Sara Nelson

From Publishers Weekly
Frequent newspaper contributor Laskin's relatives provide ample material for a gripping epic narrative, beginning in 1875 and spanning over a century. This readable and absorbing book looks at the experiences of Jews—in this case all members of Laskin's family—finding a fresh start in the United States, of those working to form a new country in Palestine, and of those trapped in Nazi-controlled Europe. His American ancestors' experiences were highlighted by his great-aunt, Itel, who founded the Maidenform Bra Company in 1922. And that quintessential American success story of a hard-working immigrant who makes good contrasts well with the account of her cousin Chaim's life in Palestine around the same time—he found disillusionment there, rather than a land of milk and honey. The sections dealing with the grim toll that the Holocaust took on the family don't provide new insights into the Nazis' inhumanity; the horrors of the time gain more impact when conveyed through the stories of individual lives. Laskin (The Children's Blizzard) makes the most of the rich array of stories his research unearthed. Agent: Jill Kneerim, Kneerim, Williams, and Bloom Literary Agency. (Oct.)

From Booklist
This interesting and often moving family saga spans a century and a half, and three continents and touches most of the critical historical trends and events of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Laskin’s great-great-grandfather was a Torah scribe who raised six children in a nineteenth-century shtetl on the fringe of the Russian Empire. Eventually, those siblings and their descendants split along three different paths and destinies, and the recounting of their individual experiences also tells us much about Jewish history. One stream led to the U.S., where family members found great material prosperity. A second stream included those captivated by the ideal of Jewish redemption, and they pursued the Zionist ideal in Palestine, taking an active role in the creation of Israel. The remaining group stayed in Europe and was devastated by the Holocaust. Laskin (The Children’s Blizzard, 2004) is a gifted writer who effectively blends family and world history in a deeply felt story filled with the joy and sadness that has characterized Jewish life in this period. --Jay Freeman

A masterful tale of a family's survival...
By Jill Meyer
How does a family survive and grow in the midst of bad times? If members are struck down by cudgels, fire, poison gas, and guns can the family tree continue to blossom? Author David Laskin, in his new book, "The Family: Three Journeys into the Heart of the Twentieth Century", takes a family - his own extended one - from the shtetels of what is today's Belarus to the United States and Israel. But "three" journeys? That third "journey" ended in the killing pits at Ponar and the ghetto at Vilna and a fire pit at Klooga in Estonia.

David Laskin's family on his mother's side began in the shtetel of Rakov and the yeshiva center of Volozhin, both in current-day Belarus. Their family name was Kagan or Kaganovich, which is a derivative of the priestly name of "Cohen". Many of the men were scholars and torah scribes and the women either kept the house or made the coin. Hard times in then-Russia - pogroms and government suppression and economic failures - made the idea of emigrating to "der Goldene Medina" - the United States - a very attractive one. Several members of the family went to New York City in the early 1900's. Hard work and luck turned their lives into increasingly prosperous ones. By the 1920's one branch of the US family had found success in the wholesale metals business, which the other branch became "Maidenform", an early creator of bras and girdles. Remember the old ads, "I dreamed I rode a merry-go-round in my Maidenform bra" or some-such? Well, they were the creation of Itel Kagan Rosenthal who was a fiery socialist back in Rakov til she became a sterling capitalist here in the US. But with assimilation also came a lessening of the faith - the Orthodox Jewish faith that kept the family together back in Russia - and the US branch of the family became less and less religiously observant as the generations passed along.

Other members of the Rakov family emigrated to Palestine in the same time, after years of Zionist fervor back in Russia. Most worked the land and founded developments and, eventually, one grandson died in defense of Israel in the 1973 war. The family prospered in Israel and that branch of the tree grew strong. But it was the final branch, that of those family members who stayed in Poland in the darkening days of the 1930's into the years of final destruction in the early 1940's as the Germans invaded what was then Poland (the borders had changed after WW1) and killed the 15 or so members of the family unable to escape to...anywhere "safe".

And that part of the story - the prosperous American branch of the family unable to help those left behind in Rakov and Vilna - is one of the most interesting. Unable to help...or unwilling? Or simply unknowing about the increasingly horrifying conditions of Jews in that widely disputed area between Germany and the Soviet Union? Those left behind sent letters to loved ones abroad asking for help in emigrating but while money was sent by the American branch, little or no real help was given to their trapped family members. All met death in the German occupation of the area, after being confined to ghettos or sent to work camps and concentration camps.

David Laskin brings the book up-to-date after WW2. Family members who had separated in the early 1900's managed to find each other and relationships were established by both branches who survived - those in Israel and the United States. His book is an epic journey - both physically and religiously - of a family who survived through the horrors of war.

More Than Just a History
By Bookreporter
The family's story begins in 1835 on the western edge of Russia in the village of Volozhin, where Shimon Dov HaKohen, author David Laskin’s great-great grandfather, was born. Shimon Dov, a Torah scribe, and his wife Beyle raised six children, living a quiet life in their pious community. Like parents everywhere, Shimon Dov and Beyle hoped their offspring would stay nearby and lead the same quiet lives they had chosen.

THE FAMILY follows several generations of that Russian Jewish family through decades of births, marriages and deaths. Each person born in each generation has his own ideas, hopes and dreams. And each must work and search to find the life to which he believes he wants. Rather than trace each generation, this review will trace the three main paths.

One popular path some descendants took was entrepreneurship. Those folks settled in America and, through much hard work and sacrifice, succeeded in business beyond their wildest dreams. The author’s aunt Itel ran a very successful dressmaking business. When the flapper look became popular, she branched out into the bra business and enjoyed great success as the founder of Maidenform Bra Company. Three of Itel's brothers --- Harry, Sam and Hyman --- settled in the Lower East Side of New York, where they operated a wholesale business that also thrived.

A second path led to the Holy Land for family members who became Zionist pioneers. The first to settle in the Holy Land was Chaim in 1924. He joined a moshav, a cooperative farming village that gave him more autonomy than he would have living on a kibbutz. Life was hard, working the arid land and dealing with complicated problems of who owned the Land. Sonia, a cousin of Chaim's, left home in 1932 with four friends. Their circuitous route eventually landed them in Hafia, where Sonia traveled alone to Herzliya and met up with Chaim, whom she married the following year.

The family had already endured a world war and a depression. The folks who chose to stay behind or who were not able to immigrate to safety when they needed to became part of the horrible ethnic cleansing known today as the Holocaust that occurred during the Second World War. That tragic path led to brutality and death.

David Laskin, a modern-day scribe, met his cousin Benny, Sonia and Chaim's son, who shared his treasure trove of 281 family letters. Those letters, written and cherished over the years, sent from the Old Country to America and the Holy Land added much help to the massive, lengthy and tireless research that then led to this book’s publication. One family and three very different paths. THE FAMILY is not only an important history book. As it traces the roots of just one family, it clearly shows that decisions of where to live and how to live often greatly affect the lives of our descendants in ways we cannot begin to imagine.

Thoughtful, Insightful, and Beautifully Written
By david b. williams
As Mr. Laskin has done in his previous books, he has crafted a moving and thoughtful story, which reveals his deep passion for his subject, his brilliant research, and his beautiful writing. The Family is impossible to put down, though at times incredibly painful to read because of the horrors he describes. But despite those horrors, Laskin leaves the reader with hope, from the resilience of his family. We are fortunate that such a gifted writer shared his story of his family. I suspect that each person who reads The Family will learn a bit more not only about the world of Mr. Laskin's family but gain insights about one's own family.

The words of over seventy-five authors present a pastiche of American voices, from the early days of the Great War to the ongoing conflict in Iraq and Afghanistan. Each of the stories features a type of rhetorical depiction that enables its audience to connect vicariously with the experience presented by the author. This account sees the transformation of the American perspective from an insular one, which emphasizes the purpose driven actions of strong individual agents, to ones in which individuals are caught up in the inevitable consequences of an all-determining stream of events.

Review

"Before you were mine . . . " wonders a little boy, "[d]id you live in a warm house with warm smells and a rug that was only yours? [Or were] you kept on a chain, with a dusty bowl and lonely sounds all around?" Never varying from this direct address, the little boy speculates about the life his dog may have led before being adopted from the shelter. He imagines happiness, cruelty, misfortune, neglect: "[Maybe] you ran away and they never heard that if your dog runs away, you look for him . . . until you find him." Softly framed pastel panels and vignettes depict a round, mustard-colored little mutt playing with an imagined boy, making puppy-mischief, alone and scared, before being taken to the shelter for "a meal, and a bath, and a bed of your own" before coming home with the narrator. Boelts's restrained text and Walker's affecting illustrations combine to pack a small wallop directly to the hearts of dog-loving children who will almost certainly give their pets an extra hug afterwards. A note on adopting a shelter pet follows this unabashedly emotional offering. (Picture book. 4-8) -- Kirkus Reviews October, 2007

"A poignant, thought-provoking book." -- School Library Journal, 12/01/2007

"In this witty, wise picture book Boelts presents a kids-eye view of a consumer fad that rages through school at gale force." -- The Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books, starred review, 12/05/2007

"Whether children are on the shoe-owning or the shoe-envying side of the economic line, they can sympathize with Jeremy and rejoice in the way he eventually resolves his problem with his too-small shoes." -- The Horn Book, 11/01/2007

"Cozy, soft-edged pictures of an adorable dog characterize this warm-hearted book in which a boy, whose dog has died, gets another dog from a shelter. The young narrator, thrilled with his new pet, speculates about the dog's past in a series of questions. He imagines another boy loving the dog and playing with it: "Was your boy proud when you learned a trick? Did he talk about you at recess?" He pictures the dog as a lively puppy whose owners were annoyed by his chewing and digging, and in a few imagined scenes, the dog appears neglected and unhappy. But the story comes full circle as the narrator welcomes the shivering stray into its friendly new home. The pastel illustrations use a variety of layouts to infuse the story with emotion, and the author's note speaks of the "ripple of hope" created when someone adopts a dog. Children are likely to beg their parents for a trip to the shelter after reading this moving book." Kathleen Odean -- Booklist Dec. 2007

PreS-Gr 2

Boelts does an outstanding job of exploring the adoption of a rescued dog from a shelter. An unnamed boy whose family takes in this sweet-looking pet describes what the animal's life might have been like "before you were mine." The child wonders if his dog was loved, but too mischievous for the previous owners, or if they moved into a "no dogs allowed" apartment, or if he got lost, and "they never heard that...you look for him...until you find him." The boy also imagines how tough life must have been when the animal was on his own, and how frightened he might have been, even after being rescued. Walker's illustrations--some muted, others vibrantly colored--perfectly capture the misery and fear, the uncertainty, and ultimately the rapture of this pup because "you're home." The text and illustrations create moods that shift between poignant and blissful. A short essay about the "ripple of hope" created by a successful adoption of a dog from a shelter is appended. Pair this title with Marc Simont's The Stray Dog (HarperCollins, 2001) to drive home the joyous outcome when the right family meets up with the right dog.--Deborah Vose, Highlands Elementary School, Braintree, MA Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. Before you were ours, you knew we'd come get you...
By Cheryl Olvera
It is geared toward kids, but both my husband and I cried when we read it and hugged our rescue Wyatt Earp. We couldn't imagine how someone had ever given him up. It does make you wonder what your dog's life was like before he was yours. Did he smile? Did he play? Was he happy? Wyatt looked like he had cried for several days before we got him as he had streaks from his eyes. The book makes you feel how lucky you are to be loved by a rescue dog.

Malta GC: Rare Photographs from Wartime Archives (Images of War), by Jon Sutherland

The Siege of Malta during World War II was one of the greatest dramas of the conflict. Bereft of vital defending aircraft, guns and ammunition this small island endured a succession of air raids from the Italian and German air forces. Valetta was virtually destroyed, the inhabitants took to living in the hills and caves as their houses lay in ruins. Food was scarce and the islands only salvation and survival depended on the arrival of the Allied convoys which themselves were constantly under attack as they dodged their way across hostile Mediterranean seas. This book contains unseen photographs taken during the siege and dramatically show what life was like for the population and the troops and pilots who so valiantly defended Malta.

Great supplement for studying the Siege of Malta
By James D. Crabtree
Malta, whose place in history was already established well before the 20th Century, became a microcosm of WWII thanks to its strategic position amidst the crossroads of the Mediterranean. The British, who had controlled Malta for a hundred years, used it as base for interdicting Axis shipping going to North Africa while the Germans and Italians launched determined attacks to eliminate Malta and to cut off Gibralter-Egyptian air and sea traffic. For its determined resistance under air attack and naval blockade Malta was awarded the George Cross.

This collection of photographs allows the reader to get a feel for what it must have been like for the Allied defenders. Pictures of everyday life in the island are interspersed with truly touching and telling photos: antiaircraft guns manned as bombs are falling but not shooting for lack of ammunition, aircraft riddled with bullets and flak shrapnel from a mission over Italy, a grinning Tommy about to try his hand at disarming a German aerial mine, etc. Well worth looking into. I just wish the book also included tieing together all the place names used.

Military buffs here's a book for you!
By Margo
I gave this book to a friend who is originally from Malta and also a military buff (WWII). He vouched for the photographs of the airplanes, tanks, etc., hard to find. A much needed historical account of Malta's valiant defense of their homeland. A welcome addition to any WWII collection.
