Foundation for understanding presidential failures

Pious offers some unique theories as to why Presidents fail. His take on specifically Johnson and Nixon are very spot on. But seems to spend too much time defending Carter and his "moral approach" to his failed presidency. For those looking to discover more about the "imperialistic presidency" we are ascending to this offers a good foundation. Slightly tilted to the progressive side in his presentation.

Not well edited -- contains many typos and is very long winded

A fine book. Not overly interesting. Very long winded. It seems to be well-researched, but it contains several confusing typos per chapter which change the meanings of the sentences.

For example, on page 188, a sentence says: "They argued that since Hillary Clinton was not a PUBLIC employee, the law applied to the Task Force and its working groups." The word PUBLIC here is wrong. It should be replaced with the word "government", as this would make much more sense in the context (since this passage is talking about workers who were not government employees").

If you want to read about the different cases mentioned in the book but don't feel like combing through the cumbersome material for the raw details, just Google "Bay of Pigs" or "Malaise Speech".

If anything, this book needs a second edition.

Read all other comparable LASIK/refractive surgery manual. No other book even comes close. "The LASIK Handbook: A Case-Based Approach" does an amazing job discussing the tips and tricks of the fine details and how-to practical approach. Other books with similar sample case sections (e.g. Five Steps to Start Your Refractive Surgery and Refractive Surgery: An Interactive Case-Based Approach) fail to provide the same level of much needed detail in specific practical management tips (e.g. choice of exact ablation profiles, nomograms..etc for most available platforms) for specific patient scenarios, although the latter book is an enjoyable read. Bottom line, The LASIK Handbook is a must purchase for any ophthalmologist starting out his/her LASIK practice. Can't recommend enough.

The Circus is Coming.....

Miss. Bindergarten's class is very talented!

I'm an Early Childhood major. I have to put together a Curriculum Kit and the kit has to have a theme, with all activities based on that particular theme. I chose Under the Big Top as my theme. The kit also has to be age appropriate for Pre-K, Kindergarten or First grade. The Miss. Bindergarten books fall into that category. I searched for this book, but could not find it locally. So, I came to the place that I knew that I would be able to find it and purchased it, now I have it in my collection of children's books and it will go into the library of my in home daycare.

The book is wonderful and full of awesome colors! I just love Miss. Bindergarten and her class of talented students. I love how the book uses the ABC's to tell the story. I look forward to adding the other books of Miss. Bindergarten into my collection.

It arrived during the time fame that was mentioned and it is in great condition.

It's a wonderful resource containing a series of spiritual exercises, ranging from prayer or reflection to drawing or writing poetry. It gently instructs while inviting the reader to learn via experiences ranging from journaling to drawing to taking a walk.
Trujillo's style is breezy, straightforward, and easy to read, yet it's backed by well-researched, solid scholarship (both Biblical and extra-biblical). She's grounded in Scripture yet reinforces the truths of the Bible with quotes from a variety of sources, including historical Christian women leaders such as Amma Syncletica and Teresa of Avila. Trujillo's reflections and instructions reflect a deep reflection on Scripture and the nature of spiritual growth, yet they are highly accessible to even new believers. This is a guide that believers at all different stages of their spiritual journey, and all different temperaments, will enjoy--and be transformed by. Highly recommended.

"Cultivate Your Character" is one study in the Flourishing Faith series published by Wesleyan House. The book is divided into 30-day chapters with four main sections: true character, reflection, transformation, and changing.

Highlights:
Short chapters- Room for the reader to think
Easy to read - Well-placed subheads and bullet points
Variety - Action steps like think, create, and ponder, etc. are well-mixed
Format- individual or group study could be accomplished with the same book
Creativity - study encourages higher thinking skills beyond rehearsing facts

I enjoyed my time in this study because there were quotes, diagrams, and concepts that brought new light to familiar scripture passages. I look forward to more studies in this series.

I picked this book up at a Holiness Summit. I really like it! Wonderful Bible study full of creative activities for you to do as you go through the devotional. If you like to be creative this is for you! One example of this is that you read through 2 Psalms, then you take a bunch of colored pens, markers or colored pencils and you write everything those 2 chapters said about the character of God. You can write in bubble letters, flowy cursive, banners, etc. makes the bible come alive for me. thank you Kelli for writing these!

The idea of cats playing human roles, especially in a great novel, struck me and my co-author, Deborah Guyol, as delightfully absurd, precisely because it is so improbable. Cats are, always and incorrigibly, themselves. The book years to come to fruition, dozens of agents, thousands of cat photographs, and many long days "kittfying" chapters from Pride and Prejudice.

Love Jane Austen? Love cats? Love to laugh? Then you will adore this book. Pride and Prejudice and Kitties: A Cat Lover's Romp through Jane Austen's Classic. Pamela Jane and Deborah Guyol are masters at mixing and matching adorable cat photos ( some of the scenes actually shot in Jane Austen's house by photographer Sally Keehn) with funny quotes and adorable puns. Beloved characters appear with catly characteristics and familiar Austen phrases as repeated by cats, take on new meaning. Kay Winters

This is a wonderful satire on Pride and Prejudice and on goopy cat books. The writer has done an impressive job of copying Austen's style. I forwarded it to another feline-dedicated friend, and she loves it as much as I do. I hope this is the first of a series!

There's a lot to love about this book because a lot of love clearly went into it. Pamela Jane's command of Jane Austen's vocabulary is fluent, and it seems a perfect match when paired with cats. Her treatment takes LOLcats to a whole new level, and a result is both charming and entertaining. I highly recommend this book for anybody who likes Jane Austen and/or cats. For those who treasure both, this book was written for you.

In The Clinic and Elsewhere, Todd Meyers looks at the problems of meaning caused by drug dependency and appraises the changing terms of medical intervention today.

By following a group of adolescents from the time they enter drug rehabilitation treatment through their reentry into the outside world-the clinic, their homes and neighborhoods, and other institutional settings-Meyers traces patterns of life that become mediated by pharmaceutical intervention. His focus is not on the drug economy but rather on the therapeutic economy, where new markets, transactions of care, and highly porous conceptions of success and failure come together to shape addiction and recovery. The book is at once a meditative work of anthropology, a demonstration of the theoretical and methodological limits of medical research, and a forceful intervention into the philosophy of therapeutics at the level of the individual.

A powerful, insightful and searching look at the techniques and technologies of drug treatment. A combination of a complex philosophical discussion of science and medicine with harrowing and beautiful portraits of adolescent patients.

Good, but missing some important information...

I enjoyed the book. The work is definitely valuable.

However, I was left with questions - questions that he must've been able to answer. Unfortunately, I was left feeling he didn't want to give those answers, and hid his responsibility to provide them underneath many philosophical detours.

The most important question, to me, is - were the 12 patients he followed actually helped by their buprenorphine treatment odyssey?

He mentions that he followed 12 patients, but going back through the book again, I could only identify 8 or 9 that he actually discussed. Of those he discussed, it seems that only one successfully stopped using opiates for an extended period of time, but was murdered shortly thereafter due to his life as a drug dealer.

Other than that, it seems like everyone continued to struggle. Perhaps the 3 or 4 patients he didn't discuss actually found some long term change in their substance use habits? I feel like that would've been notable though, in contrast to the fate of the others. The apparent omission of these results has me puzzled. All I can come up with as a reason for this omission is that he found something so contrary to his expectations that he had to look the other way. Even if the patients quickly disappeared, he was at least privy to this fact, and could have disclosed it.

Or maybe he did discuss those patients, and I missed it somehow. I scoured the book several times though, and couldn't find it. I'm giving 3 stars, because I think readers deserved some sort of summary of the outcomes he witnessed. Without this, the heavy philosophizing, while interesting, seems like a purposeful distraction. He essentially says he doesn't want to make his subjects into statistics or use them to declare the treatment a success or failure, but this feels like a cop-out. He had the unique experience of following these study subjects beyond the 12 week window of most buprenorphine trials, he had the ability to tell us more, and for some he reason, he chose not to.

Whatever the intentions of the author, and regardless of the missing information, this book is still a challenge to buprenorphine's status as a "wonder drug" for opiate addiction.

A great little book!

What this book lacks in size, it makes up for in content and information!
A wonderful tool to those interested in learning more about the Episcopal faith tradition, beliefs, and rites/practices. A bit too basic for someone whom is active in church and has a full and comprehensive working knowledge of Episcopalianism.
Highly recommended!

A Helpful Look at the Episcopal Church (or how it should be)

Sydnor does an excellent job at providing a view of how the Episcopal church developed and how it should continue to exist. He offers overviews of the services of the church and specifically at the liturgies and worship. He includes a brief history of the church that I found useful, even though I have read fuller histories. In his history, he includes how the Church of England developed from the Reformation and how Anglicanism has incorporated the traditions of the early church that defined orthodox Christianity. He then discusses the theology of the Episcopal/Anglican Church and its mission.

He also emphasizes the participation in the church by not only priests but by all members of the laity. He writes about how laity are called to ministry, to pray, to witness and to take responsibility for the church.

Although the view of the current state of the Episcopal church may differ than this dated view, this view is a model that can still be pursued and held up as a challenge to contemporary innovations in theology and ecclessiology.

walking away from the wedding

When Amorelle finds herself orphaned and alone she thinks she must marry to survive. When she realizes that she cannot go through with the marriage ceremony she must escape the man she does not love. She finds that by helping others without telling them about her past she helps herself. Then she realizes that she really is seeking love, not security and her world begins to change.

Similar but worthwhile!

This is pretty much like a lot of Ms Hill's books, a girl orphaned and unprotected in the world, Amorelle goes to live with relatives who use and treat her like a servant, with a room on the third floor even! But she stays as a witness to her Uncle who begins to care for her greatly. This book differs from a lot of Ms Hill's other books in that in Amorelle's loneliness she accepts the care and physical attentions of a hansome gentleman, he is as usual absolutely controlling and unreasonable when she comes to her senses but the book is one of Ms Hill's later books and displays humor and is in my opinion a worthwhile read. This is very different from the book Maris by Ms Hill, although the central theme is the same.

Not To Be Missed

Amorelle Dean is a minister's daughter. She is capable, lovely and strong with a strong faith and a good Christian upbringing. However, she is quite naive about the ways of the world. With the death of her father, she now has to face the world on her own.

This book is not so much a romance as a women's fiction. The title of the book is quite fitting. It is all about Amorelle and her life once her father died, her growth personally and spiritually, mistakes she made and the happiness only God can provide in granting her a happily ever after.

It is a story of great characters and a plot filled with mild intrigue. Most times Grace Livingston Hill doesn't just write a cute romance about boy and girl. There is something else going on in the external plot that drives the story just as much as the falling in love part.
From the moment her father dies, Amorelle is at the mercy of other people whether they are
trying to match her up for marriage or turning her into a servant or forcing her into a horrid engagement. Then enters Russell Garrison and finally she has a protector, someone who understands her and appreciates her. Of course, this merely increases the conflict in other areas of Amorelle's life.

It's almost like a Cinderella story. She is the poor orphan girl who comes to live in her uncle's house with his new wife and her grown daughter. They don't appreciate her and turn her into a servant and later allow an imprudent engagement that Amorelle does not want. When wealthy Garrison arrives, he is like the prince come to rescue her from her trials.

There are parts of the book which were slow and at times it was agonizing to read how terribly Amorelle was put upon and preyed upon. Once Garrison came into the picture, the story flowed and it became much more interesting. It was a well written book and as always GLH presents the gospel and God's affirming love. A good book not to be missed.

Not only is the book filled with wonderful healing stories
