A frequent USA Today contributor, Krattenmaker (Onward Christian Athletes) combines reporting and opinion in this analysis of new evangelical leaders and their efforts to engage the culture in a noncombative way. Krattenmaker, who is not an evangelical and describes himself as a secular progressive, says he is keenly interested in evangelicals who “defy the stereotype.” He is convinced that people such as Kevin Palau, Gabe Lyons, Jonathan Merritt, and even Focus on the Family’s new leader, Jim Daly, are moving away from confrontation on such issues as abortion and gay rights. He also suggests evangelicals may be distancing themselves from their unblinking support of capitalism and the Republican Party. And they are also doing good works, whether fighting sex-trafficking or adopting orphans. Krattenmaker calls this “goodwill-mongering” evangelism and salutes these efforts. He convincingly argues that liberals, and especially atheists, should drop their reflexive antipathy toward evangelicals and begin to engage them. The two camps may not agree, but the nation may be better served by a more understanding and respectful posture. The Evangelicals Progressives Can Work With?

In 1991, James Davison Hunter introduced the term culture war into American public discourse. His book, Culture Wars: The Struggle To Define America, described "competing moral visions"--Progressivism and Orthodoxy--that generated heated conflict on a number of hot-button issues: family, education, media and the arts, law, and electoral politics. Many people interpreted these conflicts in geographical (Blue State vs. Red State), partisan (Democrat vs. Republican), or ideological/religious terms (secular Left vs. religious Right), although such interpretations were overbroad and simplistic. Two decades later, these conflicts still roil the waters of American society.

The purpose of Tom Krattenmaker's The Evangelicals You Don't Know is to introduce progressive readers to "the next generation of Christians" and urge them to work together on issues of common concern. In the process, he reframes America's culture wars. "At the level that matters, the quarrels that vex American society are not between Christians and non-Christians, between religionists and atheists, between evangelicals and everyone else." In other words, Hunter's Progressivism/Orthodoxy dichotomy is inadequate. "The line that matters now is the one separating the `we're always right/you're always wrong' arguers from unity-seeking, goodwill-mongering action takers of whatever religious persuasion, or none, ready to go to work to address a society's aching needs." What actually divides America, he seems to be saying, is not what you believe but how you behave--how you put your beliefs into practice. For Hunter, Progressivism and Orthodox are polar opposites; for Krattenmaker, mirror images.

This focus on behavior instead of belief explains why Krattenmaker profiles whom he does. Mostly, he profiles community organizers (e.g., Kevin Palau), activists (e.g., Stephanie and Shoshon Tama-Sweet), artists (e.g., Tony Kriz, Dan Merchant), and writers (e.g., Gabe Lyons, David Kinnaman, Jonathan Merritt), though he does profile an ex-evangelist (Jim Henderson) and cites theologians (e.g., N. T. Wright, Paul Louis Metzger). What is missing from his presentation of next-generation Christians are church leaders, whose work includes matters of belief: conversion, spiritual formation, and all things related to building up Christian community, the Church.

On the one hand, this is understandable. The vast majority of evangelicals live the vast majority of their lives outside the church's walls, and it is important to see how they do so. Specifically, it is important to see how their faith helps them to navigate in the sea of an increasingly secular culture, and do so with integrity.

On the other hand, Krattenmaker's description of "the next generation of Christians" is tendentious precisely because he ignores the processes by which people become and remain evangelical. An almost-exclusive focus on what happens outside the church walls is as lopsided as an almost-exclusive focus on what happens inside them. Surely, one cannot describe the new breed of evangelicals without some attention to both!

Further, I am somewhat surprised that in a book that explicitly eschews a "we're always right/you're always wrong" mentality, Krattenmaker nevertheless can't seem to find anything right with the religious Right. Please don't misunderstand what I'm saying: Krattenmaker has many good things to say about evangelicals, at least certain evangelicals, and at least to the extent that they're cooperating with progressives on community issues or moderating their tone. By the same token, while he takes his fellow progressives to task for their tone, he never seriously questions their ideas.

Even with this criticisms in mind, however, I think reading The Evangelicals You Don't Know is a valuable exercise, especially for evangelicals.

First, it is a useful reminder that orthodox theology and political conservatism are not necessarily identical. (I would add, of course, that they are not necessarily contradictory either.) If you believe that the GOP is "God's Own Party" (or that Jesus would've registered as a Democrat), you're engaging in anachronistic, self-serving, partisanship, not honest inquiry.

Second, and consequently, the book helps readers engage in self-criticism. Evangelicals have a bad reputation with non-Christians and need to understand why. Sometimes, the reputation arises from the unavoidable conflict of moral visions that James Davison Hunter described in Culture Wars. Other times, it arises from evangelicals being wrong about an issue, or from being self-righteous, hypocritical, uncaring jerks. Progressives also need to engage in self-criticism, as Krattenmaker points out, for they sometimes have the same "totalitarian" (his word) mentality that they critique in the religious Right. (And I would add that some of their ideas and policies are wrong or less than helpful.)

Third, the book points out that there are issues pertaining to the common good on which people of competing moral visions can nevertheless cooperate. For example, Kevin Palau (evangelical) and Sam Adams (former gay mayor of Portland, Oregon) were able to agree to cooperate in addressing the city's homelessness problem. And even where evangelicals may not be able to cooperate, they may find that there is a better way to talk about the divisive issues. Here, the best example in the book is Jim Daly of Focus on the Family. While he and Krattenmaker don't see eye to eye on issues relating to homosexuality, both realize that a kinder, gentler tone in the discussion is helpful.

Twenty-two years after the publication of Culture Wars, America is still riven by competing moral visions. Some of these conflicts are irresolvable, because they touch on core principles, on moral absolutes. But as The Evangelicals You Don't Know suggests, there are situations where both sides can cooperate, and even when they disagree, they can always speak and act with civility and respect toward one another. Despite my criticisms of Krattenmaker's book, I resonate with those suggestions.

The best book about "us" I've ever read

Tom Krattenmaker has bumped Dan Gilgoff's "The Jesus Machine" out of the No. 1 spot of of the most reasoned and meaningful examinations of the world I inhabit. As an evangelical -- I might even qualify as a capital-E Evangelical because of my many years working for Focus on the Family -- I appreciate that Krattenmaker has written a book free of incendiary rhetoric and full of revealing analysis. We are not the "bad guys" or the "good guys" like most other books from outside or inside our camp posit; we're just "guys" trying to live by the values we hold dear, succeeding sometimes, failing others, making the world a better place with the former and, hopefully, learning from the latter.

For someone who does not profess an evangelical faith himself, Krattenmaker presents an understanding of us -- not just of our actions, but our hearts -- that, frankly, we don't usually articulate as well as he does here. He calls us on our crap -- which we ought to be doing to each other, if we follow biblical exhortations; shows respect for what motivates even our missteps (our belief in the truth of the Bible); and, unlike any other commentator who has commented on us, challenges his own tribe (liberals/progressives) to take the journey he's taken to appreciate us as more than a caricature or a Bill Maher punchline.

The people profiled, ideas advanced and conclusions reached by Krattenmaker have the power and insight to change the world. Here's an idea to foster that outcome: Read the book with someone who couldn't disagree with you more on matters of faith and ideology, and then use it to guide discussions to help you get past your mutual faulty presumptions. Then band together to do some good in your community.

The Evangelicals I actually DO Know

Tom Krattenmaker is a Portland area journalist specializing in religion and public-life. He has contributed articles to everyone form USA Today, Salon, the Huffington Post and the Phildelphia Inquirer. His previous book, Onward Christian Athletes, took aim at the way pro athletes are used by Conservative Chrisitianity to spread their agenda (i.e. the gospel). In his new book, The Evangelicals You Don't Know, Krattenmaker takes a closer look at new trends within the Evangelical movement. He writes not as a religious insider, but as a journalist examining the movement. He is a self-described progressive and is therefore suspicious of evangelical's tradition agenda.

Krattenmaker observes a shift within evangelicalism. While older evangelicals have tended to behave as though they were engaged in a war with wider American culture (alá Chuck Colson and Jim Dobson), 'new evangelicals' are more willing to engage in dialogue. There has been a noticeable change in tone. His exploration of this shift leads him to people like Shane Claiborne, Kevin Palau, Jonathan Merritt, Gabe Lyons, Dave Kinneman, Jim Henderson and Jim Daly (current head of Focus on the Family). What he finds is that the `new evangelicals' are more concerned about community and civil service, more engaged with the wider culture, more compassionate and less combative on typical `hot-button issues' like marriage equality and abortion, and less aligned with the republican party and conservative values. His interview with Jim Daly reveals that even ultra-conservative evangelicals have also moved beyond culture wars to a kinder, gentler conservatism, more willing to engage in mutual dialogue without demonizing the opposition.

I liked Krattermaker's tone throughout this book. While he is not a `religious insider,' Nor is he is not out to demonize evangelicals. He is hopeful and optimistic about some of the changes he's seen within the evangelical movement in the last generation and makes the case that evangelicalism's move in a less fundamentalist direction, takes the wind out of new atheist sails. Fundamentalism thrives on knee-jerk traditionalism with little thoughtful engagement with culture; New Atheism's critique of moderate evangelicals do not carry as much weight, because these Christians are intentional about addressing issues, not disengaging from culture and thoughtfully thinking through their beliefs on a number of issues.

Krattermaker's biggest literary gift is his tone. He doesn't bash evangelicals (even those he thinks are way too conservative). Neither does he examine the movement uncritically. In several places, he critiques where evangelicals have failed to engage in dialogue with progressives. However, he also doesn't demonize these new evangelicals for holding to Biblical principles. If there is a thesis to this book it is this: The culture wars are over, and now progressives and evangelicals can engage in fruitful dialogue and work together on issues they both care about (i.e. world literacy, hunger, human trafficking, etc.). Krattermaker's tone is irenic. He hopes to move the conversation beyond the typical name calling that is launched at the other side by both the Right and the Left.

My one small criticism of the book, is that it doesn't really describe the Evangelicals I don't know. I feel like living in the North West, among many progressive evangelicals, I am at home with the people he profiles. I am to the Right of some of them, to the Left of others. I have read the book's of several people he interviews and have been enriched by their insights and perspectives. This is where the evangelicalism is that I'm apart of is, but I wonder if his account, paints an accurate picture of ` the evangelicals I don't know' in, for example. the rural Midwest where people tend to be more conservative in their politics and demeanor. I also look at the Tea Party and wonder if it is perhaps too early to proclaim an end of the Cultural Wars. There are still many on the Left and Right digging in for Armageddon (or the next election, whatever comes first).

But to the extent that Krattermaker names some hopeful signs, I think this is a valuable book (he never pretends to characterize the whole evangelical movement). I give this book four stars and recommend it for anyone interested in how Evangelical's public witness has developed in recent years.
