James H. Laster is professor emeritus at Shenandoah Conservatory of Shenandoah University, Winchester, Virginia and is also the University's reference librarian. He has been the musical director for 52 musical theater productions.

Too little that's actually helpful

Unfortunately, this is written to a very narrow audience: the choral director or musician with no musical theatre experience. So perhaps half of this already slim volume is dedicated to teaching musical theatre 101--down to what does a stage manager do. Too little is on the art and craft of directing a musical--no more than a slim booklet's worth. The advice on that is okay I guess but I (who know musical theatre well and am a professional pianist but never have been a musical director) didn't find much that went beyond common sense.
