Dieses Terrain, bestehend aus durch die Geschichte der Science-Fiction hindurch kultivierten Untergattungen, durchstreift die Arbeit, um schließlich zur genaueren Beschäftigung mit dem Genre Utopie zu gelangen.
Dieses Genre dient dabei in weiterer Folge als Basis dieses Werks, das sich davon ausgehend dem zentralen Forschungsinteresse - der Bestimmung des Begriffs Dystopie - widmen kann.
