Zu seinen bedeutendsten Arbeiten zählen hierbei die ab 1952 entstandenen Veröffentlichungen zum Doub-le-Bind in der menschlichen und tierischen Kommunikation. Einen Ausgangspunkt bei der Erforschung dieses Phänomens bildeten die im sozialen Spiel von Tieren auftretenden Paradoxien, die BATESON mithilfe der mathematischen Theorie logischer Typen von WHITEHEAD & RUSSELL beschrieb. Bei den Double-Binds handelt es sich um widersprüchliche und in ihrer Widersprüchlich-keit schwer zu durchschauende Aussagen über die Beziehung zwischen einem Binder und einem Opfer. Für das Opfer ist es schwierig, die verschiedenen Ebenen einer Nachricht des Binders zu unterscheiden. Es muss dazu bestimmte Verhaltensweisen anwen-den, die im schlimmsten - dem pathologischen - Fall dem klinischen Erscheinungsbild schizophrener Symptomatik entsprechen. Es gehört zum Wesen des Double-Bind, dass er nicht von den in ihm Befangenen, sondern nur von außen, etwa durch einen Therapeuten, aufgehoben werden kann. Da Double-Binds nicht zwangsläufig zu pathologischem Verhalten führen müssen, können sie gezielt, im Sinne einer paradoxen oder Symptomverschreibung, als therapeutisches Mittel eingesetzt werden. Obwohl sie die Grundlage zu zahlreichen weiterführenden Forschungen bildet, konnte die Double-Bind-Theorie in kontrollierten Studien nicht empirisch bestätigt werden.
