Buehlman (Those Across the River) pits Andrew Blankenship and Anneke Zautke, companions in witchcraft and Alcoholics Anonymous, against Russian ogress Baba Yaga, whose son, Misha, falls prey to mischievous water sprite Nadia, a friend (of sorts) of Andrew&'s. Contrasting with exotic magical escapades, real-world losses haunt both Anneke and Andrew. As the threat from Baba Yaga mounts and bad things happen to Andrew&'s sidekicks, the eponymous house no longer provides a certain refuge. The logic of the plot is eclipsed by the eruption of characters who evoke Dickensian whimsy and range from the merely unusual to the bizarrely imaginative. Within this magical universe, rivalries, revenge, and self-seeking contend with the willingness to sacrifice. The final confrontation, evolving in part from Andrew&'s prior service to Baba Yaga and her daughter Marina&'s defiance, wreaks an ambiguous ending in an explosion of enthralling fantasy. The vibrant, bracing atmosphere easily overpowers any niggling concerns about a few incongruous incidents. (Oct.)

About the Author
Christopher Buehlman is the winner of the 2007 Bridport Prize for Poetry and the author of three novels and several plays. He spends half the year in Florida and the rest on the road.

The best yet!

This book is brilliant. I've been eagerly anticipating it for over a year and it did not disappoint.
First, Buehlman's versatility as a writer is astonishing. Even though all three of his books are inventive and engrossing, I never would have realized that all three are by the same author if his name wasn't on the cover. His settings pervade every story, and the language of each book reflects the setting in an immersive way.
My favorite aspect of his writing is his use of language and metaphor. Even though this is a long book (which I burned through in less than a week), each scene moves at the taut pace of a spy novel. I would kill to have his descriptive ability -- he gives you clear pictures of every person and setting but each metaphor advances the story or character. The result is a rich, textured, well-nuanced feast.
I loved the way he integrated the story of Baba Yaga into such a modern tale. The protagonist was complex, interestingly flawed but sympathetic, and his choices made sense. The magic and spell components were clever as hell. The other characters were believable and fascinating. The story, subplot, and reveals are deftly interwoven.
I swear, reading this book was like having a huge crush on a rock star who picked me out of the crowd and took me out on the town. I frequently wanted to jump up and down and say to my friends, "OH MY GOD, DO YOU GUYS SEE THIS?!?!" My only complaint is that I need more of my friends to hurry up read it!

I highly recommend The Necromancer's House.

Deeply influenced by the dramatic styles of Russian literature as well as the fantastical story telling elements found in both Southern Gothic and Latin American literature, The Necromancer's House is an ode to narcissism & the human condition.
Unconventional and highly stylized, Buehlman takes familiar elements and distorts them to view the world from the point of the absurd. This is a tale of magic and love told through the lens of surrealism - much like the Salvador Dali paintings the author references in the story.
In Buehlman's world, wizards wage warfare fit for the modern age. Spells that cross the Internet; talking to the dead via video tape; mythical creatures updated to include casual sex & cigarettes; while, the classic, magic as a panacea for aging is still strongly in effect.
I greatly enjoyed this novel. The main story and the various sub stories were original and fantastic. The weakest part of the novel is the ending which seemed contrived in an effort to provide a HEA. I highly recommend The Necromancer's House.

Will You Come to Call At "The Necromancer's House"?

Christopher Buehlman's The Necromancer's House, is what can only be described as a trip into the strange and magically unexpected.
Though there are some rather creepy aspects to this story (the Rusalka) and (Salvador, dog turned glorified house boy) for the most part, this book is more about the interpersonal relationships that Andrew, who happens to be a necromancer, shares with his rather unorthodox social circle and the people who are trying to kill him.
This is a story that is awash with detail. So much so...in fact, that one is often sidetracked from the course of the story. If you are a reader who doesn't mind little forays off the story road to look at the shiny little specifics...you will love this book. If however, you are a reader who likes things a little less "round about", this book will be leaving pretty designs on your wall when you throw it.
That being said, let's get back to the good stuff. The off kilter dark humor and snarky comments and banter the characters engage in often serves to lighten the mood of some very dark moments. The author should also be very proud of the fact that he pulled no punches when it came to outlandish moments of magical purpose.
The Necromancer's House reads like a magical suspense thriller with a little of Chuck Palahniuk thrown in for good measure. At 400+ pages, and over 100+ mercifully short chapters, this tale does often leave the reader wondering if there is an end in sight, but the journey is well worth the sometimes bumpy, but always original ride. This may not be a book for everyone...but it just might be the book for you.
