About the Author
The Rev. Dr. James Barney Hawkins IV is vice president of institutional advancement, associate dean for the Center of Anglican Communion Studies, and professor of pastoral Theology at Virginia Theological Seminary. He is also an Episcopal priest with over 30 years of parish ministry. He is the editor of two books with Church Publishing: Christ and Culture: Communion after Lambeth (Canterbury Studies in Anglicanism) and Living With a Divided Mind.

A Fine Reflection

The Reverend Barney Hawkins in his work "Episcopal Etiquette & Ethics" is an interesting, possibly important, and certainly informative read for anyone who wishes to understand what the priesthood is like from the inside. Mr. Hawkins breaks his chapters into different themes - baptism, confirmation, confession of sin, and more. He not only breaks down his topics with a description of its development over time in the church, but most chapters also include some challenging situations.
I discovered the latter to be the most entertaining portions of the book. They are situations that will challenge the reader, especially if the reader is a clergy person, to ask themselves "how would I respond to this?" Luckily, mere pages later, the good Reverend shares his journey towards completeness in "solving" these dilemmas. A few of these are laugh out loud funny, and the hilarity comes so unexpectedly...be careful who is around when you are reading!
All in all, whether you are a lay person who wants a glimpse behind the scenes, or a priest wanting some guidance on how to approach and answer some of the tough situations that arise, then this work is for you.
With this, I feel that I have a colleague on my bookshelf, whom I can consult at a moments notice if needed!

Enjoyable Episcopal Church stories and reflections

Hawkins recounts his decades of work in the Church and various situations that he has encountered over the years. These are presented largely as "problems" facing "clergy" -- no doubt reflecting his years teaching seminary -- but are just as applicable to any serious lay member of the church. After all, the Episcopal Church cherishes the priesthood of all members -- and thus there is much to learn from these cases for all members.
His reflections and resolution sometimes do not align well with my own thinking, as in how he dealt with some challenging situations around marriage ceremonies (I'll skip the spoilers). However, that is not a problem because the book serves exceptionally well to call us to reflection; if we disagree, that's OK if we simultaneously think more deeply about why and what the situations mean.
The writing is light and non- "theological" in tone, making it an enjoyable read. Some of the stories will have you laughing, others will call to mind friends and acquaintances in the church, and others may make you sit up and argue with the author. That's good all around and highly recommended for anyone interested in the church, which is to say all "priests", that is, all members, ordained or lay. Cheers!
