What happens when an eight-year-old mischievous boy genius becomes best friends with the brilliant-though-humble elementary school janitor? Pages upon pages of hilarious comic strips, of course! Caulfield gets a kick out of frustrating his mean old third-grade teacher, Mrs. Olsen, by cracking wise-guy jokes and facetious questions; his reward is detention, where he gets to spend time with the equally quick-witted janitor Frazz. The two spend conversations discussing everything from math to literature with funny insight accessible to readers of all ages. This e-book original collection of Frazz strips compiles the most amusing—and most touching moments as the friendship between the unlikely pair develops. Cogito, Ergo Caulfield is not only a celebration of creativity and clever humor, it also includes exclusive commentary from Frazz’s creator, Jef Mallet himself. Mallet’s work was nominated by the National Cartoonists Society for a Reuben division award for Best Newspaper Comic Strip in 2004, and Frazz has won two Wilbur Awards in 2003 and 2005, which honors excellence in communicating values and ethics. Indeed, within Frazz’s jokes and antics is the heart of the strip: an illuminative approach to learning, which is fun for kids and inevitable for adults.

Enjoyable, but not what I expected
By D.K. Henderson
My own fault; I should have read the description more carefully. But after waiting many years for additional Frazz collections, when I saw these three new titles I grabbed. I don't regret buying them, they're a lot of fun.
However...WHY AREN'T THERE MORE COLLECTIONS??!!! Why have they only published 3 collections, plus these three specialty Kindle publications? By my reckoning, at a year per collection, starting in 2005, we should should have at least 8-going-on-9 collections by now. I adore this strip. I want more Frazz!!!

Short but satisfying
By NF
Frazz, by Jef Mallett, is one of the best comic strips of the past few decades, possibly even up there with the immortal Calvin & Hobbes. Frazz is a songwriter who has a side career as a janitor at Bryson Elementary School, or perhaps it's more accurate to describe it as the other way around.
Frazz, as portrayed by Mallett, is still pretty much a kid himself. He remains a janitor, even though his songwriting career is successful enough that he doesn't need to, because he genuinely loves the kids, particularly one brash youth named Caulfield. Caulfield is brilliant and bored but he has an instant and deep rapport with the gawky janitor. The rest of the supporting cast includes Miss Plainwell, the first-grade teacher, whom Frazz is smitten with, Mrs. Trevino, the second-grade teacher, Mrs. Olsen, the third-grade teacher and the bane of Caulfield's existence (and vice versa), Mr. Burke, the fourth-grade teacher, Mr. Spaetzle, the Principal, and Coach Hacker, the gym teacher. In addition to his love of children and songwriting, Frazz is an avid cyclist and triathlon competitor.
What I like most about the strip is that Mallett really gets children right, their playfulness, their living in their own world, where only adults who have a touch of the child in them can enter. Frazz is someone I would love to hang out with, with and without the kids. There is widespread speculation that Mallett designed Frazz as an adult Calvin, from Calvin & Hobbes, a brilliant underachiever who lives in his own world. There is something to be said for this but Mallett has always denied it and I think the work stands on its own very well. There is reason to believe that Frazz is more closely modeled after Mallett, hiimself, who is also an avid cyclist and triathlonist, and who clearly has not lost touch with his inner child. There are numerous literary and musical references scattered throughout the strip and I occasionally find myself looking up an obscure reference.
Frazz was first released in book form in 2005, with two sequels, the last of which was published in 2008. This new book is one of three new Kindle editions, the first available since that third volume. I have no idea why they stopped publishing the books but I wish they had not, as I've re-read all three of those volumes multiple times, each time feeling like I was returning to visit old and very dear friends.
This new Kindle edition is quite short, only 60 pages, each of which contains just a single cartoon, many of them with a brief explanatory blurb from the author. While still very entertaining, and very worth the price, I don't think it is quite up to the standard Mallett set in the earlier books. Still, any strip that includes this little gem...
Miss Plainwell: Are you OK?
Mrs. Olsen: Oh, my sciatic nerve is bugging me.
Frazz: That's the big nerve that starts in the upper part of the back of her leg.
Caulfield: Oh, so she's putting up with a big pain in the ...
Frazz: But of course.
Caulfield (appalled): I've been replaced?!
...is worth a look. I highly recommend the first three Frazz books, in particular. I'm docking this book two stars: one because there isn't that much content and the other because, frankly, I suspect that Mallett is starting to run out of ideas. There is some good stuff here but it doesn't quite match what he's done before.
