About the Author
John Hick (1922–2012), was one of the most influential philosophers of religion of his time. He was HG Wood Professor of Theology at Birmingham University from 1967 to 1982, and before that taught at Cambridge. His books have been translated into 17 languages.

Liberal Believers Need to Read Hick

This is Hick's most thorough attempt to argue for a religious pluralist perspective.
In The Fifth Dimension, Hick argues that there is a Spiritual Reality that individuals can encounter personally. This Spiritual Reality may be called God (or its equivalents) in Western religion or Brahman, the Tao, the Dharma/Nirvana, etc. in Eastern religions and may be conceptualized as personal or impersonal, depending on the tradition. Salvation or liberation lies in the act of reorienting one's life around this reality. As the saints attest, making this reorientation leads to profound peace and a universal love for creation.
This book doesn't seem to have a wide audience, but in my opinion, it is Hick's best, and most comprehensive, work. There is no other author who more clearly makes the case for religious pluralism. If Hick's hypothesis is true, when individuals experience God, they are coming into contact with a Real external reality, although their interpretation of that experience may be colored by the particular religious tradition they encounter It through.
Liberal believers of any major world religion will benefit from reading this work.
