New Age - not for critical thinkers

The book has useful information and is well written. However it sloped down to New Age mumbo jumbo reaching its climax with the chapter of "Affirmations" and the mention that you can get things like money or cure a cancer by self-talk. You may believe this together with astrology, etc. and like this book. However, this book will turn most rational people off.

Very helpful book that works

This is a very helpful book. I might be biased because I have had the privilege of knowing and working with Dr. Bowers myself. If you don't work with her personally, this book is the next best thing. There is a nice blend of theory and practicality. So not only does she tell you the background of certain ideas and philosophies, she also provides concrete examples and then step by step suggestions of how to implement the ideas. Many of the items Dr. Bowers discusses in her book are also ideas I have researched and written about myself (workplace bullying, sleep hygiene, affirmations) and found her approaches to be spot on. Her ideas have worked for me and they can work for you too. I am glad to have this book to refer back to time and time again.

Catalyst to change...

Many authors and disciplines have dealt with the power of the mind. Dr. Bowers has done her research and references a lot of them in this one book. She gives suggestions for unearthing faulty core beliefs. They can then be replaced with constructive, functional beliefs which lead to healthier behavior. She says you can choose to "act" rather than fall into "knee-jerk" responses to situations. She says, among other things, that this takes a considerable amount of work but is well worth the effort.
I loved the fact that some of my beliefs came to the surface while reading, and I created affirmations to replace them. I am grateful that such a catalyst to change exists.
