Darin schreibt er jeder Phase des Verstehens besondere, unterstützende Aufgabenstellungen und Unterrichtsverfahren zu.
Grundlegend für Waldmanns Modell ist die Theorie des handlungs- und produktionsorientierten Unterrichts.
Handlungs- und produktionsorientierter Unterricht geht davon aus, dass eigenes Tun einen intensiveren Lernprozess ermöglicht, als „bloße Instruktion und das Unterrichtsgespräch".
Außerdem basiert die Theorie des handlungs- und produktionsorientierten Unterrichts darauf, dass den Schülern die Produziertheit von Texten durch eigene Textproduktion bewusst wird, und die Wirkung einzelner literarischer Mittel selbst erfahren wird. So leistet diese Form des Unterrichts einen Beitrag zur Textanalysekompetenz genauso wie das Imaginationsvermögen gefördert wird, und eine Individualisierung des Unterrichts stattfindet, da nicht für alle Schüler das gleiche Unterrichtsziel angesetzt wird.
