Ghost Gone Wild (Bailey Ruth Book 4), by Carolyn Hart

Carolyn Hart’s “irresistible cozy sleuth”* is back—good-hearted ghost Bailey Ruth Raeburn just can’t say no to an earthly rescue, even when maybe she should…

Bailey Ruth loves to return to earth as an emissary from Heaven’s Department of Good Intentions. Problem is, she’s a bit of a loose cannon as far as ghosts go—forgetting to remain invisible, alarming earthly creatures—so she’s far from the top of department head Wiggins’s go-to list for assignments.

That’s why she’s surprised when the Heaven-sent Rescue Express drops her off at a frame house on the outskirts of her old hometown, Adelaide, Oklahoma, where a young man is playing the drums. What kind of rescuing does he need—drum lessons? But when a window cracks and a rifle barrel is thrust inside, only Bailey Ruth’s hasty intervention saves Nick Magruder from taking a bullet. When she materializes to reassure him, she finds she can’t go back to vanishing. What gives?

It turns out she’s been tricked by Nick’s late aunt—Delilah Delahunt Duvall—to come to the young man’s rescue, which means she isn’t back on earth in service of the department. Wiggins has no idea where she is—and now she may be trapped in Adelaide forever. Unless she can help Aunt Dee snare the person who wants her nephew dead…

From Publishers Weekly
At the start of Agatha-winner Hart's whimsical fourth novel featuring departed spirit Bailey Ruth Raeburn (after 2010's Ghost at Work), Bailey Ruth of heaven's Department of Good Intentions arrives at the Adelaide, Okla., home of video-game millionaire Nick Magruder just in time to prevent a gunman from shooting him. Since the shade of Nick's doting Aunt Dee engineered this mission on the sly, Bailey Ruth must operate on earth without her otherworldly powers. When Nick is accused of a murder, she must rely on her wits alone to clear him. Though not fully developed, the secondary characters have some amusing quirks, and even the villain, who's not readily identifiable, has a certain charm. The well-constructed plot offers an ample supply of red herrings. Fans of benign ghosts such as those in Blithe Spirit and Topper will find a lot to like. Agent: Deborah Schneider, Gelfman Schneider. (Oct.)

From Booklist
This is award-winning mystery author Hart’s fourth novel featuring Bailey Ruth. She is an emissary from heaven who returns to her small hometown to help people, but the usual protocol has been bypassed by a ghost who wants Bailey to aid the ghost’s troubled nephew, Nick. She sends the unwitting Bailey, who, because of the breach in protocol, is stripped of her usual powers once she arrives. Bailey pushes Nick out of the way when someone shoots at him, but she has no money, identification, or even clothes, which hampers her investigation into discovering who wants him dead. Nick resents Bailey’s help even after realizing his Aunt Dee sent her. The greedy Cole tries to blackmail Nick so he can have the land that Nick wanted to buy, but Cole is killed by a rifle when the two get into an argument. Nick is the main suspect, and Aunt Dee comes to Earth to help Bailey clear him, resulting in a fun partnership. History and hidden treasure add interesting elements to the plot. Bailey Ruth is back, and up to her old tricks
By Anime Lover
It has been some time since Bailey Ruth has been summoned to the Department of Good Intentions, and despite all the enjoyment Heaven can provide she wishes to go back to Earth to help someone in trouble. So when a mysterious telegram asks her to go back to her old stomping grounds in Adelade she jumps at the chance. Once there she meets a young man named Nick, who she saves from being shot by soeone with a rifle. However this has unexpected consequences as when she appears she loses her abilites to disappear, change clothes, and teleport. Now as one OF the Earth she begins to work on the mystery of who wants to kill Nick, only to learn that her mission was not sanctioned by Wiggins but by dead Aunt Dee, who is worried about Nick. But when Nick is the suspect of killing his old school rival, both Bailey Ruth and Dee must convience Wiggins (who despite being dead, I am surprised he is not gray, bald, or pulling his hair out)that they need to stay to prove Nick's innocence and discover the mystery of the Arnold property.

I have been waiting for this book, and it has not disappointed. A mystery in a mystery as you watch three different personalities clash, try to co-exist, and maybe learn to work together (as I said I feel for poor Wiggins). Carolyn Hart works her magic again in this series and I hope it is not as long to wait for the next episode.

Stranded on Earth
By Chrijeff
I can't help wondering whether Carolyn G. Hart was ever a fan of the classic Western series "Laramie" (a favorite of mine too), for the character she creates to serve as the target of Bailey Ruth Raeburn's helping efforts has a definite Jess-Harper-ish quality about him! Heaven is heavenly, but Bailey Ruth enjoys keeping busy with an occasional visit to Earth as an agent of the Department of Good Intentions. She's just had a telegram from her supervisor, Wiggins--"Possible assignment, if you qualify"--and is on her way to respond when a very decisive-looking woman on a jet-black stallion appears and tells her there's "just time to catch the Rescue Express," and none to speak to Wiggins. Before Bailey Ruth is quite sure what's happening, she's been swept onto the horse's back and plunked aboard that Earth-bound train. In her old hometown of Adelaide, OK, she finds herself dropped in front of a house where a young man (whom she later comes to know as Nick Magruder) is doing a riotous drum solo... while someone aims a rifle at his back through an open window. Bailey Ruth knocks him out of the way of the bullet--and, temporarily, out--only to find that she seems to have lost her powers: she can't change her appearance, or disappear, or teleport. Meanwhile, several people in succession appear at Nick's door--including his girlfriend and a jealous husband (not the girlfriend's). With difficulty she manages to persuade Nick that someone is really out to get him--and learns that he's a game geek who has created a wildly successful game, sold out for $9 million, and returned to Adelaide to even the score with all the people who used to treat him like gum on the soles of their shoes. Is one of them out to eliminate him? Or was someone else holding the rifle?

Eventually Bailey Ruth discovers that the woman on the horse is another agent of the Department--Nick's late Aunt Dee, who is barred from assisting him herself because of Departmental rules--and that Dee is hanging around Adelaide *with* full possession of *her* powers. The two make common cause, but when one of Nick's old enemies, who has threatened to post compromising photographs of Nick's girlfriend's mother online unless he gives up his plan to purchase a certain parcel of land, is killed while at a meet Nick and Bailey Ruth have set up, everything starts going south.

Complicated though all this may sound, Hart manages to keep everything moving along in a comprehensible way and strew red herrings everywhere while also showing the at first strained, but gradually developing, relationship between the two heavenly agents. Nick is a delightful character, geeky yet sympathetic and, like many geeks, boyishly vulnerable and appealing; Aunt Dee is imperious but well-meaning. This is one of the best of the Bailey Ruth Ghost Novels.
