About the Author
Jack Kerouac was born in 1922 in Lowell, Massachusetts, the youngest of three children in a French-Canadian family. Having left college, he joined the merchant marines and began the restless wanderings that were to continue for the greater part of his life. His first novel, The Town and the City, was published in 1950. On the Road, although written in 1951 (in a few hectic days on a scroll of newsprint), was not published until 1957 -- it made him one of the most controversial and best-known writers of his time. Publication of his many other books, among them The Subterraneans, Doctor Sax and Desolation Angels, followed. Jack Kerouac died in St. Petersburg, Florida at the age of forty-seven.

How To Read The Tape Transcripts...

Yes, at first I thought the tape transcripts were just a lot of useless padding to fill out Jack's book. Boy, was I wrong! Here's how to read them:
1. Get a couple of Charley Parker albums (Bird and Diz will do nicely.)
2. Procure a jug of red wine and a joint.
3. Put on Bird, pour a glass of wine, and just relax with the music for a while.
4. Take a few tokes. Drink more wine. Get a nice mellow buzz.
5. NOW, begin reading the tape transcripts, and voila! You are invited to the party!
You will be sitting there with Cassidy and Kerouac, digging the flow of music and conversation and experiencing a new comprehension of their friends, wives and lovers. The gossip, the stories, the subtle oneupmanship between them is a delicious fly-on-the wall experience. By recreating the set and setting of these long ago conversations, you will experience an intimacy that is uncanny. I've done this a few times and was amazed at the greater understanding I had of these two complicated men. I read and re-read the transcripts with delight and was sorry there wasn't more of them.
This is surely what Kerouac intended. It's like the modern day extras and behind the scenes specials you get on movie DVDs. I mourn their passing more than ever and the fact that there doesn't appear to be anyone out there to take their place.

Kerouac's "Finnigan's Wake"

This is what 'On The Road' should have been. The first 150 pages are enough to send you either insane or to heaven, and are more akin to a portrait than a narrative piece, painting a picture of Kerouac's relationship with Neal Cassady far superior to that shown in 'On The Road'. The description and emotion of the 1st 150 pages are vivid and some of the most impressive in 20th century literature - indeed it is one of the three contemporary masterpieces - along with Joyce's 'Finnigan's Wake' and W.S.Burroughs' 'Naked Lunch' - in fact Burroughs' himself highlighted the first 150 pages of 'Visions of Cody' as Kerouac's masterpiece (excuse me if I don't insert the exact quote but I don't have it to hand). The centre section of the work is a transcription of conversations between JK and NC as well as a few other prominent figures such as Ginsberg. This is quite interesting but can get quite labourious. After these he returns to the style of the first section. In finishing I would like to say that I recommend this to any Kerouac reader and, if possible, if there's no-one to think you're going insane, read it out loud - and in Kerouac's voice - there is a CD you can get from verve records to get the rhythm of Kerouac's speaking - these methods help in understanding the book, just like you should read 'Finnigan's Wake' in an Irish Accent

a perfection on the fine art of "sketching"

this is not really the type of book to snuggle up with if you're sleepy. if your mind is awake enough you will be jolted into a feverish state of yearning to be there as the voyeur or casual observer chronincling young cody pomeray (neal cassady) through his wild hedonistic life, never stopping, always going, never bored, always high; high on tea (pot), high on life, high on kicks. always jack kerouac is watching some young woman with a sense of sexual arousal but withdrawal (kerouac was quite explicit in his describing of woman, so you are forewarned) it was mainly this reason that voc was for so long rejected from the publishers, but at least we have it now!! and then there are the tapes which, you again need to be in a different state of mind then before to read- these are transcripts of jack dulouz (kerouac) and neal cassady talking while high on tea or amphetamines, which is really just useful to the collecter or historian, but they provided an interesting speeches about william s. burroughs, and the hole william tell ordeal. a nice read, vaguely familar to "Seymour: An Introduction" by j.d. salinger, mainly in its use of a narrartor describing his hero or idol, and the loose narrative style, and above all the wonderful crafting of descriptions that salinger and kerouac are so good at. i know this guy who never did finish this book because it always scared him- i told him to just pick it up and read one paragraph/sentence. if you need a quote for the yearbook or something, this is the book. just open the book and look. one of kerouac's best.
